The Ball Is In The Bucs’ Court For Baker Mayfield

There have been a lot twists and turns when it comes to the free agency of the Bucs and even more specifically, Baker Mayfield. The latest Bucs’ quarterback, who will either be a former or current by the end of the spring, has been making the rounds during Super Bowl Week and answering a number of questions.

While there have been a ton of signs alluding to Baker Mayfield reuniting to the Bucs (which certainly can’t be ignored unless you’re living under a rock), there’s no guarantee he’s back in Tampa Bay until he’s signed on the dotted line.

That’s why Baker Mayfield has to be careful with his words. Mayfield was on the Dan Patrick Show this week, where he was asked a number of questions, both Bucs related and other topics. In my personal opinion, Patrick is one of the best interviewers in sports, so he tends to get the best out of each guest, and particularly for Mayfield in this moment.

After doing an introduction for Mayfield, Patrick asked, “I mentioned your Tampa Bay Buccaneers quarterback, is that how you are still to be introduced as the Buccaneers quarterback?

Mayfield’s reply: “That’s to be determined.”

Patrick right after: “Who’s determining that”

And that’s when Mayfield went into detail.

“I think the ball’s in their court right now,” Mayfield said. “I’ve been vocal about the mutual interest. I’m very appreciative of the opportunity I had there. And just how the run the organization and what they’re all about. How do we win? How do we put our guys in the best position possible to win?

“I’ve been vocal about that. And going into free agency, my mindset would be the same thing, looking something similar to that, obviously seeing them first hand, I know how they operate.”

Why The Bucs Had Success Last Season

Patrick soon after asked Baker Mayfield about how the Bucs were successful last season. If one would recall, many thought the Bucs would either be competing for the top pick in the draft or looking to reshape their organization. The over/under on their wins for the season was 6.5, which they blew through the roof.

The status of the Bucs will certainly be set out by Baker Mayfield, Mike Evans and many others, but that doesn’t take away what they accomplished in their year together.

“I don’t know why everybody thought that Tampa wasn’t going to be very good team,” Mayfield said. “Obviously Tom (Brady) is Tom, great quarterback, obviously, but a lot of pieces that were there for those deep playoff runs were still there, still intact. Great locker room, the cultures great, those guys know how to win, they’ve been there before.

Watch the whole interview with Dan Patrick on his show, which had many great moments during it.
