Hero Chiefs fan describes moment he tackled alleged gunman in scene that went viral in aftermath of parade horror

The man who tackled an alleged gunman at the Chiefs’ victory parade said it was just a natural reaction to intervene.

One person has been confirmed dead and up to 22 were injured, with nine children treated for gunshot wounds in terrifying scenes in Kansas City as more than a million took to the streets to celebrate the Super Bowl win.

Terrifying footage showed fans fleeing the scene, while one video that showed two people taking someone to the ground amid the chaos has gone viral.

Paul Contreras, along with one other person, helped subdue the alleged assailant before police arrived.

“I just heard somebody yelling to stop this guy, tackle him, and he was coming in the opposite direction,” the 44-year-old told CNN. “You don’t think about it. It’s just a reaction.

“He got close to me, I got the right angle on him, and I hit him from behind. And when I hit him from behind, I either jarred the gun out of his hand or out of his sleeve because as I’m taking him down to the ground, I saw the gun on the ground.”

He then explained there was a struggle until the other good Samaritan helped out, adding he didn’t see the alleged gunman fire the weapon or realise he had it on him until he saw it.

While it had been rumoured that the man apprehended was one of the suspects, Kansas City Police Chief Stacey Graves refused to confirm whether that was the case.

“I have heard that that fans got involved in the apprehension or the pursuit of one of the suspects,” she said in the aftermath.

“I cannot confirm that right now but that is something that I have heard myself.”

Chaos broke out at the Super Bowl parade after shots were fired

The Chiefs parade was set to end at the Union Station and players were on stage when shots were heard ringing out.

Chiefs stars, including Travis Kelce, Patrick Mahomes and coach Andy Reid were rushed away to safety, with the members of the team expressing their concern on social media shortly after.

It was confirmed by the Chiefs that all players, coaches and staff were safe, as revealed by Mayor Quinton Lucas in a press conference.

“The Chiefs noted that their players, coaches and staff are all accounted for at this point in safe,” Lucas said.

“We are truly saddened by the senseless act of violence that occurred outside of Union Station at the conclusion of today’s parade and rally,” Chiefs’ team statement said.

“Our hearts go out to the victims, their families, and all of Kansas City.

“We are in close communication with the Mayor’s office as well as the Kansas City Police Department.

“At this time, we have confirmed that all of our players, coaches, staff and their families are safe and accounted for.

“We thank the local law enforcement officers and first responders who were on-scene to assist.”
