Woj goes on to say that the first year of this deal is fully guaranteed. The second and third years then “become guaranteed for $15.7 million if Reed’s team advances to conference semi-finals in the 2023-24 season.” Smart move on Utah’s part because the Sixers are advancing that far but the Jazz likely are not, so they force the Sixers into three years if they match the sheet.
But the Sixers likely won’t match this/can’t match this because it puts them into the luxury tax. $14 million over. Losing BBaul Paul is going to resonate because he was a fan favorite and looks to be next to join a list of promising young players that left Philadelphia to go play elsewhere. He’s another Isaiah Joe, Charles Bassey, Matisse Thybulle, etc.
On the other hand, Reed only played 6-7 minutes per game backing up Joel Embiid in the later stages of the Boston series. He started for Joel in game one and played very well, bagging a 10 point, 13 rebound double-double on the road. But his role naturally diminished as Embiid’s minutes were stretched and the rotation shrunk, as is natural for any team that reaches the conference semifinals. Detractors might say that Reed was a hustle guy that fans overvalued.
Regardless, it felt the Sixers finally had something stable behind Embiid in a young and energetic player that they themselves drafted in the second round. Now it looks like they’ll lose him while navigating this James Harden situation and watching a guy like Tobias Harris hit the cap at $40 million.
