Manchester United vs Wolverhampton predictions

It has been a long 10 years for Manchester United.

There have been a few successes in the post-Alex Ferguson era. United have won an FA Cup, a Europa League and two EFL Cups since the Scot decided to retire in 2013.

But since then, the Red Devils have not won another Premier League title. They came second under Jose Mourinho in 2017/18 and were again runners-up with Ole Gunnar Solskjaer at the helm in 2020/21. However, on neither occasion did they really get close to finishing top.

Could this season be different? United will face stiff competition for the prize.

Manchester City are the best team in Europe. Liverpool should be much improved from last year. Arsenal look ready to kick on after their near-miss last time out. Chelsea will be stronger too.

But there is a fair amount of optimism around Old Trafford right now, despite the continued presence of the unpopular Glazer family as the club’s owners.

Erik ten Hag led United to a third-place finish in the Premier League in 2022/23, while also guiding the team to EFL Cup glory.

The Red Devils have since added Andre Onana, Mason Mount and Rasmus Hojlund to the ranks, and there could yet be more signings before the window closes on September 1.

A sustained push for the title will still be difficult, but United supporters have reasons to feel positive about their side again.

Manchester United vs Wolverhampton Wanderers betting tips

Manchester United should get their campaign off to a winning start against a Wolves team in disarray.

Manchester United to win to nil – 6/5 (bet365)

Manchester United finished in third place last season, 14 points adrift of Manchester City in top spot.

It was the attacking part of the game that prevented them getting closer to the championship.

Only City and Newcastle United conceded fewer goals than the Red Devils, who also kept the most clean sheets in the division. But United only had the joint-seventh best record in terms of putting the ball in the back of the net.

That is something Ten Hag will be keen to address this season, but it remains to be seen whether the 20-year-old Hojlund is ready to lead the line week in, week out for one of the biggest clubs in the world.

United may therefore have to lean on their defensive solidity once more. David de Gea has been replaced between the posts by Onana, an excellent ball-player from deep but a fine shot-stopper too.

Lisandro Martinez and Raphael Varane missed parts of last term with injury, but the centre-backs are fit and raring to go.

Wolves scored a league-low 31 goals in 2022/23 and they will struggle to breach the United backline on Monday.

Manchester United -1 handicap – 10/11 (bet365)

This had already been a turbulent summer for Wolves, but the situation got even worse on Tuesday.

That evening the club confirmed that Julen Lopetegui had left his position as manager by mutual consent after just nine months at the helm.

“While our ambition had been to move into the new season together, it is public knowledge that there were differences of opinion on some key topics, and it was agreed by all parties that it would be best to part ways ahead of the new campaign,” said the sporting director Matt Hobbs.

Gary O’Neil looks set to replace Lopetegui in the Molineux hot seat, but this represents a chaotic build-up to the opening weekend of the 2023/24 season.

Wolves have lost some talismanic figures this summer, including club captain Ruben Neves, veteran midfielder Joao Moutinho, and former top scorer Raul Jimenez. Nathan Collins, a centre-back who impressed last term, has also departed.

With money tight, there is little prospect of Wolves splashing the cash in the next few weeks, although we could see one or two loan signings come through the door.

All of these off-field distractions have made Manchester United’s task easier on Monday, and we fancy a comfortable home win.

BET NOW

Marcus Rashford to score any time – 10/11 (bet365)

Marcus Rashford enjoyed the best season of his career to date in 2022/23. The England international found the net 30 times in all competitions for the first time.

Seventeen of those strikes came in the top flight. Only Erling Haaland, Harry Kane, Ivan Toney, Mohamed Salah and Callum Wilson managed more – and four of those five players are central strikers.

Rashford prefers to operate on the left flank, from where he can cut infield onto his stronger right foot.

But we will probably see Ten Hag field the United academy product through the middle for the visit of Wolves.

Hojlund is nursing a back injury and it could be a few weeks until we see him pull on the red shirt for the first time. Meanwhile Anthony Martial did not feature at all in pre-season.

Even in the unlikely event that Rashford starts out wide, he will still be United’s main goal threat.
