Liverpool vs Tottenham Hotspur predictions
They say it’s the hope that kills you and Liverpool fans may be about to learn that the hard way.
A few weeks back, Jurgen Klopp’s side looked dead and buried in the fight for the top four. But a five-game unbeaten run, including three wins on the bounce, has just about kept the Reds in contention.
To be clear, it is a long shot. Liverpool trail Manchester United, the team that currently occupies fourth spot, by seven points.
What’s more, they have played one game fewer than their arch-rivals, who drew 2-2 with Tottenham in the midweek round of fixtures.
But it is not inconceivable that Liverpool qualify for the Champions League. They will have to rely on favours from elsewhere, but victories in each of their remaining six matches might be enough to get over the line.
Another 18 points would give them 71 for the season – a tally which would have been sufficient to finish in the top four in each of the last five Premier League campaigns.
The run-in does not look overly daunting. Meetings with Tottenham and Aston Villa have the potential to be tricky, but Liverpool will have home advantage against both opponents.
Their remaining fixtures pit Klopp’s charges against Fulham, Brentford, Leicester City and Southampton.
Liverpool will probably not be in the Champions League next term, but a win here would keep their name in the conversation for now.
Liverpool vs Tottenham Hotspur betting tips
Two outsiders in the top-four race will be looking to keep their slim hopes alive by collecting three points on Sunday.
Liverpool to win and over 2.5 goals – Evens (bet365)
Tottenham were at least able to salvage some pride on Thursday.
Their fans must have been fearing another thrashing at the interval, by which point Manchester United already held a 2-0 lead.
Needless to say, this was not the start Ryan Mason would have hoped for.
Handed the reins following the dismissal of Cristian Stellini, another interim head coach, the 31-year-old was looking for a vast improvement on Tottenham’s dismal display in the 6-1 demolition by Newcastle United.
He got it in the end. Spurs fought back valiantly after the break and, in the end, they were good value for a point.
Despite that comeback, Tottenham will struggle to avoid defeat at Anfield. Liverpool are still extremely difficult to beat on their own patch: only Leeds United, of all teams, have managed to do it in 2022/23.
Tottenham still look vulnerable. That is true of both their mentality and their ability, particularly in defence.
They should have some joy going forward, particularly if Harry Kane’s raking passes can release Son Heung-min and Dejan Kulusevski in behind.
But Liverpool pack a considerable punch in attack and their quality in forward areas will concern Mason given his team’s defensive ineptitude of late.
Cristian Romero to be booked – 2/1 (bet365)
Playing at Anfield as a visiting player is not easy. It is a stadium which demands cool heads, especially in the face of persistent Liverpool pressure.
Unfortunately for Tottenham, Cristian Romero is lacking that particular commodity.
The Argentine is not a bad defender, although he has gone backwards this term – much like many of his team-mates.
There is a fine line between tenacity and recklessness, aggression and rashness. Romero too often strays from the former to the latter.
He often tries to nick the ball in front of his opponents, but that can make it easy for rival forwards to roll him and win a free-kick or penalty.
The former Juventus stopper has a habit of diving in and going to ground too easily. If he does that against Liverpool, there could be trouble.
Romero has been booked 14 times in all competitions for club and country this season. He has received a red card on a further two occasions.
Referee Paul Tierney should reserve a spot in his notebook for Romero’s name.
Mohamed Salah to score any time – 11/10 (bet365)
With everyone fit, Klopp has an abundance of attacking options at his disposal.
Presuming Mohamed Salah is a guaranteed pick in the front three, there are only two remaining places for Luis Diaz, Diogo Jota, Roberto Firmino, Cody Gakpo, Fabio Carvalho and Darwin Nunez to fight over.
In recent weeks, Klopp has opted for a trio of Salah, Gakpo and Jota. It will be interesting to see whether he makes any chances this weekend.
Jota is perhaps the likeliest candidate to drop out. He was replaced with an hour on the clock in the 2-1 defeat of West Ham United on Wednesday and only recently returned to full fitness.
Salah will keep his place and he is the best pick in the goalscorer market. The Egypt international has not quite been at his brilliant best this season, but he has still contributed 27 goals to the Liverpool cause.
Sixteen of those have come in the Premier League and few would bet against him breaking the 20-goal barrier for the third season in a row.
Ivan Perisic is an attack-minded right wing-back, and Salah could have some joy exploiting the space in behind the Croatian.
