3:18 pm Churchill Downs (Race 6) – Wicked Halo 3/5 (3-star play)

A field of 6 fillies and mares are set to go to post for the 6-furlong Open Mind Stakes and this should be straightforward for Steve Asmussen’s high-class filly, Wicked Halo. This daughter of Gun Runner has form figures of 3, 3, 1, 1, 2 at this course and she should win this — which will set her up nicely for another bid at the Breeders’ Cup Filly & Mare Sprint at Santa Anita in November.

3:50 pm Churchill Downs (Race 7) – Hot Beach 7/2 (2-star play)

The Grade 3 Pocahontas Stakes has been won by some lovely two-year-old fillies since its inception in 1976 and Hot Beach, who was impressive when winning the Ellis Park Debutante last time out, can be the next one in line. She stalked the pace on debut before taking it up at the quarter pole to win by two lengths and, with more improvement to come, she remains an exciting filly.

4:55 pm Churchill Downs (Race 9) – Risk It 2/1 (2-star play)

Breeders’ Cup Classic winner Gun Runner was a top class colt trained by Steve Asmussen and one of his offspring, Risk It, could also be pretty special for the same connections. He won comfortably on debut at Saratoga last month, and lines up in the Grade 3 Iroquois Stakes against some equally exciting colts but he was so good first time out that I wouldn’t want to be taking him on.

5:26 pm Churchill Downs (Race 10) – Search Results 3/1 (2-star play)

Chad Brown’s Grade 1 winning mare, Search Results, has yet to visit the winners’ circle in 2023 but the general feeling is that she is going to blossom towards the back end of the season and now could be the time to catch her in the $400,000 Locust Grove. Tyler Gaffalione’s mount has been running well in defeat and her latest breeze at Belmont Park was an eye-catching one so a bold bid is expected.
