Bucs Best Quotes From Camp: 8/5

Here are some of the best Bucs quotes following their the team’s training camp practice on Saturday, August 5.

Bucs Head Coach Todd Bowles

On how much margin for error he’s giving the Bucs quarterbacks in the preseason as they apply a new offensive scheme:

“You always have margin for error, [but] no matter what you’re learning, you don’t want to turn the ball over. You’re going to learn certain things because we’re not going against each other from an install standpoint, so the defense will have some things on certain days and the offense will have some things on certain days. But, you don’t ever want to turn the ball over if you can help it – whether you throw it away, throw it in the dirt.

Some things you want to try out and get the kinks out and there’s a certain amount of time for that, but as you get closer to preseason and the season, you definitely don’t want to turn the ball over.”

On how much the preseason games impact his evaluation of the Bucs quarterbacks as opposed to practice:

“It’s all cumulative – you’ve got to put it all together. You don’t put one over the other. You put a lot of things – classroom, on the field, [being a field general], accuracy, when to get rid of the ball, checking to the right play. There’s a lot of things that go into that – it’s more than one thing. You definitely don’t want to see turnovers every day.”

On how he and Bucs Offensive Coordinator Dave Canales will decide what the quarterback rotation looks like in the first preseason game:

“We’ll talk about it next week. Again, we haven’t talked about it yet. We’ll talk about it as a staff and I’ll let them know how I feel and they’ll give me their opinions. We’ll put together a plan. When we get to that, I’ll have a better answer for you.”

On his thoughts on Bucs Offensive Coordinator Dave Canales so far:

“I think Dave has been doing an outstanding job. He’s an outstanding teacher – he was like that in the interview, he’s like that every day. He’s very upbeat, he’s very detail oriented. He understands where they’re at, he understands how to get guys in position. He learned them all in the spring. As he installs and gets a feel for who can do what, I think it’s coming together pretty [well]. I like where he’s at.”

On where Bucs CB Zyon McCollum has improved:

“Just understanding the scheme. Physically, we know he can run and do a lot of things. Understanding the scheme and the game slowing down for him and him making the right plays – not necessarily the wow plays – has been really big this spring from a mental standpoint for him. He’s been doing a great job at that.”

On what he likes about Bucs OLB Yaya Diaby:

“He’s strong, he’s tough, he loves to play the game, he’s very explosive off the ball, he has heavy hands. We always say we like guys with heavy hands that can handle any kind of block. He’s very versatile. He’s making his presence felt this camp in pads.”

Bucs Outside Linebacker Yaya Diaby

On what his mindset has been going into practice every day:

“I just want it. I just want it [really] bad. I’m learning from guys like Shaq [Barret], Joe [Tryon-Shoyinka], ‘Nelly’ (Anthony Nelson) – so, it’s been really fun. I’m just trying to prove to [those] guys that I can be in the rotation with them and that we can be a good front.”

On learning Bucs Head Coach Todd Bowles’ defensive system:

“[I’m not] going to lie, it’s a really hard defense to pick up. The guys have been helping me a lot – Joe [Tryon-Shoyinka] and ‘Nelly’ (Anthony Nelson) – they’ve been really breaking it down for me and helping me to get an easier way to understand it. Coach [George] Edwards has been helping me, as well.”

On going up against Bucs Tackle Tristan Wirfs as he’s moving to left tackle:

“I love that guy. I’m not going to lie, since [mini-]camp, since I’ve been getting the reps with the ‘ones,’ it’s been awesome going against him. I just want to keep going against him every day to just improve my abilities as well, so [that] when I go against other tackles, [there’s] nothing I haven’t seen before.”

Bucs Tackle Luke Goedeke

On his transition from playing inside to right tackle:

“It’s going great. I mean, kind of like riding a bike, almost just knocking some dust off,  switching back to where I played in college and everything. The transition has been great, working with [Offensive Line] Coach Joe [Gilbert] everyday [and] bouncing ideas of Tristan [Wirfs]. It’s really going smooth, the transition.”

On his relationship with Bucs Tackle Tristan Wirfs:

“Me and Tristan, I mean, I see him as my best friend on the team no doubt. We do a lot of stuff off the field. On the field, we are always talking, going through technique, and he’s one of the best offensive lineman in the league right now, so I’m always asking him questions, working through technique, and kind of picking his mind about stuff. [We] just stay as positive as possible with each other, but other than that, the relationship is great and we always have a heck of a time together. We always have fun and, [are] having fun out here on the field as well.”

On the communication in the O-line room:

“The bond we just have in the O-line room, I feel like the camaraderie is great, so we really carry that bond out to the field. Our communication on the field has really grown since OTAs, the way we attack double teams, our communication, and even knowing what we’re going to do without saying it to each other, we are already to that level. I feel like we are big steps ahead already just with our communication overall with guys in the O-line room.
