Over at Liberty Ballers, the great Paul Hudrick procured a statement from Paul Reed, apologizing for some social media posts dating back to his teenage years.
The source of this is an Outsports article that found a bunch of homophobic tweets from NBA players, the vast majority from years ago. In compiling that list, they came across a few from Reed, and so he told Liberty Ballers this:
“Last week, two insensitive statements that I made on social media as a teenager were published in an article. The statements do not reflect the man I am today, and I’ve deleted them from my account. I sincerely apologize for any hurt that these posts caused both then and now. Over the years, my eyes have been opened to the struggles that the LGBTQ+ community faces every day. Now more than ever, equality is crucial and essential for the future of our communities.”
The tweets were published in 2015, which makes Reed 14 years old at the time.
I wonder what the public consensus is on digging through old tweets. Is this worth the time? Does it solve anything? It seems like this happens all the time, something compromising coming to light even though somebody posted it when they were 13, 14, or 15 years old.
Two recent examples that we wrote about on Crossing Broad:
- The Axios reporter who said Charles Barkley threatened to hit her. People went through her Twitter account and found stuff deemed racist toward Asians. She then resigned.
- Nathan “White Snake” Gerry – people found old tweets where he used the N word. He apologized.
We can’t dive into anybody’s head to find out if they are truly racist, homophobic, etc, but it seems as though society generally accepts these apologies and then we all move on. They chalk it up to a young kid saying something stupid and perhaps not understanding the seriousness of what they did or said. Obviously that’s not everybody, but it seems like a majority of folks are willing to let these incidents slide.
A few years ago, Investor Emeritus Jeff had a good question. He wanted to know why NBA agents and teams don’t have their players scrub their entire social media history before going pro. That feels like it should be mandatory at this point. You must wipe your entire social media history entirely. Good thing they didn’t have Twitter when we were idiot kids, or else we’d be frantically trying to erase it all. The stuff that was said at Boyertown Junior High East would have gotten us cancelled ten times over.
