Major League Baseball 2022 Preview: LA Dodgers start MLB season as bookies’ World Series favorite

Major League Baseball’s brief work stoppage is over and spring training is underway. The MLB 2022 season is now just a few days away as first pitch takes place on April 7.

The regular season will conclude on October 5. Between the season’s first pitch and the final out of the regular season, a lot will unfold. The Los Angeles Dodgers start the season as bookies’ favorite to win the World Series.

The Atlanta Braves were not the bookies’ favorite to win the World Series in 2021, but the team surprised onlookers to win the Fall Classic. MLB 2022 rule changes

As previously mentioned, there will be some rule changes this season that could certainly affect the way you wager money on MLB. Let’s take a look at some of the rule changes to the league.

The new season will see the National League adopt the designated hitter. For NL fans this is likely something they never wanted to see. Unfortunately, NL teams will now use the DH throughout the season.

In another change that purists of the game will hate, the playoffs have been expanded to 12 teams. This will water down the importance of the regular season, meaning teams may not push for wins in certain situations/games.

In the postseason, extra-innings won’t begin with a runner on second base.

In an attempt to prevent teams from losing purposefully or at least not trying their hardest in the second half of the campaign, a draft lottery will be implemented.

Like professional soccer and basketball, uniforms will feature advertisements. Helmets and jerseys will both have adverts on them.

MLB has restricted the number of times a player can be optioned to the minor leagues in one season.

While it won’t apply to the 2022 season, fans can be excited about the 2023 schedule will be more balanced as teams will play at least one series against every opponent in both leagues.

Things to make note of for MLB 2022 betting

Baseball America has outlined a few interesting issues/trends going into the new season. One of which is the number of innings pitched by starters continues to decline. With a shortened spring training, this trend is likely to continue.

The biggest story or event of the MLB 2022 season is bound to be something no one sees coming.

Offense could be up this season. With a short offseason for pitchers to prepare, offenses could take advantage.

According to Baseball Almanac, the number of home runs over the last 10 years has been:

  • 2021: 5,929
  • 2020: 2,303 (Shortened season due to COVID)
  • 2019: 6,776
  • 2018: 5,585
  • 2017: 6,105
  • 2016: 5,610
  • 2015: 4,909
  • 2014: 4,186
  • 2013: 4,661
  • 2012: 4,934
