Chelsea, Manchester United and Nottingham Forest smash records as Premier League clubs complete historic £1.9billion transfer window by spending more than Bundesliga, LaLiga and Serie A combined

Deadline day marked the end of the Premier League’s biggest transfer window in history.

A number of records tumbled as England’s top-flight clubs spent a total of £1.9billion over the summer – more than the Bundesliga, LaLiga and Serie A combined.

In fact, Premier League clubs smashed the record for most money spent over a season in one window alone.

The previous record stood at £1.86bn from the 2017/18 campaign, which featured a £1.4bn spending spree in the summer window.

Meanwhile, spending was up by 67 per cent on last summer’s total of £1.1bn.

Chelsea completed late deals for Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang and Denis Zakaria, capping off the biggest spend of any club across one window in Premier League history.

Following the takeover by American billionaire Todd Boehly, the Blues splashed a total of £255.3m on Wesley Fofana, Marc Cucurella, Raheem Sterling, Kalidou Koulibaly, Carney Chukwuemeka, Gabriel Slonina and Aubameyang, while Zakaria arrived on loan from Juventus.

Manchester United sealed the most expensive deadline day signing in history with an £85million deal to land Antony from Ajax.

The Red Devils were the Premier League’s second-highest spenders, breaking their own previous record in one window by splashing £202m over the summer.

Meanwhile, there was also a slice of history for Nottingham Forest.

The newly-promoted side made their 20th and 21st signings of the summer on Thursday, breaking the record for most players bought in a single window.

Tim Bridge, lead partner in Deloitte’s Sports Business Group, said: “The record level of spending during this transfer window is a clear indication of Premier League clubs’ confidence, as fans return to stadia and a new broadcast cycle begins.

“It’s now become part and parcel of the Premier League that clubs are willing to pay significant sums to maximise performance.

“This season, the desire to acquire playing talent has reached new levels as the pressure for clubs to stay in the competition is higher than ever before.”
