Bucs DB Scheduled For Surgery

Some more unfortunate news is facing the Bucs as Ian Rapoport of the NFL network is reporting that safety Logan Ryan will need to have surgery for his foot injury. Ryan is scheduled for surgery on Wednesday, which is going to put him on injured reserved.

If there’s any silver lining, Rapoport says that the plan is to have him back later in the season and for the playoffs as well.

Ryan Was Key For The Bucs

One could argue that Ryan has been the best free agent signing for the Bucs this year. Him playing at safety has allowed Anotine Winfield Jr. to be utilized as a slot corner, which had really benefited the Bucs.

Ryan has made crucial plays for Tampa Bay as well, causing a key fumble in their Week 2 win over the Saints and recovering a fumble along with picking off Aaron Rodgers in their Week 3 matchup against the Packers.

On the season, he’s recorded nine tackles, two pass breakups, one forced fumble, one fumble recovery and an interception in four games. Ryan last played in Week 4 against the Chiefs where he left early after nine defensive snaps.

What’s Next For The Bucs In The Secondary?

The Bucs’ secondary is a bit in flux with the veteran safety out for several weeks. Mike Edwards was inactive last game as he deals with an elbow injury and Sean Murphy-Bunting was out as well with a quad issue. It seems as if Edwards is more likely to return quicker as Murphy-Bunting awaits an MRI.

That leaves Winfield and Keanu Neal as your traditional safeties, though Tampa Bay did call up rookie safety Nolan Turner and corner Anthony Nelson from the practice squad last week. Turner will more than likely be signed to the 53-man active roster.

There’s also a question at nickel corner if Murphy-Bunting is going to be out for multiple games. Dee Delaney played in 83% of the snaps at nickel with Carlton Davis and Jamel Dean lining up at their traditional outside spots. Rookie Zyon McCollum also got some play in Week 5, but that was on the outside as well with both Davis and Murphy-Bunting leaving the game early.

As the Bucs try to get back on track after a rough week, it looks like there’s going to be some changes to the secondary before their next game.
