Breaking: Bucs WR Expected To Play vs Cowboys

Just 10 months after tearing his ACL and MCL and eight months after surgery, it appears Bucs wide receiver Chris Godwin will suit up for Tampa Bay’s Week 1 tilt against the Cowboys. ESPN’s Adam Schefter was first with the news, but cautions he may not be at a full workload.

“Tampa could remain cautious and slightly limit his reps in the game due to the injury,” Schefter said.

Godwin was listed as questionable on the team’s final injury report Friday, and has been slowly ramping up his work over the past few weeks. He recently shed his knee brace while continuing to wear a non-contact jersey during practice. Head coach Todd Bowles has stated several times until he receives a hit below the waist he won’t know if he’s ready, a sentiment the Pro Bowl wide receiver shared recently.

“It’s a very complicated injury, and one that guys are just starting to come back from pretty regularly,” Godwin said. “But I think an interesting thing for me is how my injury happened, it was a contact injury, so I’d imagine there’ll be some kind of stuff with that, but you never know until you get hit. I would imagine it would be similar to like [what] a regular game would be for me. Once you get hit, now you’re in the game.”

It’s been a long road of recovery for the sixth-year wideout. On Thursday, Godwin said he would confer with team trainers and coach Bowles to make the decision to play when he felt he was ready. With a loaded receiving corps there was no rush to get him back on the field. But it appears he is ready to get back into action, and that starts tonight against Dallas.
