MLB Picks May 2: Mets and Phillies Battle in NL East

The first month of the MLB season is in and pitching has been dominating with offenses struggling to put up runs. There are several interesting early-season matchups in store for May 2, with the Mets and Phillies leading the way.

New York Mets versus Philadelphia Phillies

The Mets head to Philadelphia battling the Phillies in a division where all five teams are within a game of each other. New York is “burning hot” and +17 on the Power Ranking Indicator and the Phillies are “ice cold down” and +5. David Peterson is expected to start on the mound for the Mets and Zach Eflin is scheduled to pitch for the Phillies. Peterson is 1-3 with a 5.59 ERA and +99 on the Pitcher Profit Oscillator. Eflin is 1-1 with a 3.58 ERA, but has been a poor bet at -254. The Totals Predictor shows both teams trending “under”, but the Scores Predictor indicates nine runs on the board with the Mets winning easily at 76 percent confidence. The Mets have won four of six between the teams so far this year. Look for the trend to continue.

St. Louis Cardinals versus Pittsburgh Pirates

In this clash of two NL Central teams, the 2nd place Cardinals face the 3rd place Pirates. St. Louis is +12 on the Power Ranking Indicator and “ice cold down” on the Team Strength Oscillator, while the Pirates are +26 and “burning hot”. The Teams have been trending “under” the line and the Scores Predictor predicts nine runs on the board with the Pirates winning by a 6-3 score with a confidence of 51 percent. Adam Wainwright is scheduled to start for the Cardinals. He is 0-3 with a 4.08 ERA but has been a good bet at +1637 on the Pitcher Profit Oscillator.  The Scores Predictor is mainly a coin toss, and I am leaning towards the Cardinals with Wainwright on the hill.

Atlanta Braves versus Toronto Blue Jays

The Braves are in the mix in the tight NL East and the Blue Jays are 3rd in the  AL East. Toronto has a +29 to +24 edge on the Power Ranking Indicator and “burning hot” versus “ice cold down” on the Team Strength Oscillator. Ian Anderson is set to pitch for the Braves and comes in with a 2-0 record, 2.48 ERA, and +236 on the Pitcher Profit Oscillator. The Scores Predictor is giving only a 37.5 percent confidence with the pick. The teams have been trending “under” the line so betting under is a smart play. Look for the Blue Jays to win as home favorites.

Boston Red Sox versus Texas Rangers

The Red Sox are on top of the AL East and the Rangers are bringing up the rear in the AL West. Boston has a +23 to +4 advantage on the Power Ranking Indicator and “burning hot” versus “average up” status. The teams are trending on opposite sides of the line, so it’s best to avoid the “over/under” bet. Garrett Richards is scheduled to pitch for the Red Sox and Mike Foltynewicz for the Rangers. Richards is 1-2 with a 4.94 ERA and +300 on the Pitcher Profit Oscillator. Foltynewicz is 1-3 with a 4.67 ERA and -37.  The Scores Predictor is 47 percent confident in an 8-3 win for the Red Sox. Go with the Red Sox to win on the road.

Houston Astors versus Tampa Bay Rays

Houston is 4th in the AL West and Tampa Bay is 2nd in the AL East. Despite “dead” status after losing their last game, the Astros are 4-2 over their last six and have a +29 to +28 edge on the Power Ranking Indicator. The Rays are 3-3 over their last six and “average down”.  The Scores Predictor has the Rays winning by a 4-2 score with a confidence of 57 percent. The “under” is a smart play with the Rays edging the Astros at home.
