How to Bet on the New Suicide Squad Movie

It’s almost Summertime, theaters are opening back up around the country, and studios are releasing movies again after a long and uneventful pandemic year. It’s about to be an eventful few months for moviegoers!

Thankfully, the same can be said for fans of entertainment betting!

One anticipated blockbuster scheduled to be released on August 6, 2021, is The Suicide Squad – a half-sequel, half-reboot of the DC comics film of the same name from 2016.

This time, Warner Bros promises to get it right, handing the franchise off to James Gunn, the mastermind behind the phenomenal Guardians of the Galaxy movies in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

Currently, Suicide Squad fans have four betting lines from which to choose, adding a bit more “spice” to the movie-watching experience.

Comic book films are already thrilling on their own; viewing one while you have money riding on the first character to die in The Suicide Squad raises both the stakes and the entertainment value by several levels.

If you’re not familiar with the Suicide Squad franchise, here’s the official IMDB description of the upcoming title:

IMDB:

“Supervillains Harley Quinn, Bloodsport, Peacemaker and a collection of nutty cons at Belle Reve prison join the super-secret, super-shady Task Force X as they are dropped off at the remote, enemy-infused island of Corto Maltese.”

Before we dig into the Suicide Squad betting lines, you should watch the official red band trailer. Not only will it give you an idea of what kind of movie to expect, but there’s also some useful info we can glean from the footage to assist our wagers.

(WARNING: The following trailer contains possible spoilers, foul language, and graphic depictions of violence.)

The Characters

Before we dive into the betting odds and what I unearthed from pictures taken on set and multiple leaks, you’ll want to know which DC characters are featured in the film and by whom they’re being played.

Many of the following villains will be little more than cameos. Others we’ll know to expect for longer durations based on their billings and what we see in the trailers.

Actor/Actress Character Description
Margot Robbie Harley Quinn Former psychiatrist brainwashed by the Joker into an insane criminal.
Idris Elba Bloodsport Mercenary with a technologically advanced super suit. Shot Superman with a kryptonite bullet.
John Cena Peacemaker Ruthless villain determined to achieve peace at any cost. Described as a “douchey Capt. America.”
Joel Kinnaman Rick Flag A soldier and the Suicide Squad’s field leader.
Sylvester Stallone King Shark A massive shark-human hybrid.

Steve Agee John Economos Warden of the Belle Reve penitentiary and aide to Amanda Waller.

1st Character to Die in ‘The Suicide Squad’ Movie?

Spoiler Alert:

Leaks and spoilers discussed openly and often beyond this point!!!

The most interesting Suicide Squad betting opportunity is the line dealing with the first character to die. The promotional material for the film is captioned with “Don’t get too attached,” so we know a significant majority of Task Force X will not survive.

Writer and director James Gunn emphasized this point further on social media, tweeting:

“#DCFanDome is over, but #TheSuicideSquad lives on… at least until a good amount of them get massacred in August 2021.”
Character Odds of Dying 1st Character Odds of Dying 1st
Blackguard +300 Polka Dot Man +1200

Not Dying First

After scouring the internet for movie footage and leaks, I believe we can narrow the range of potential first-deaths to just a handful of characters. Several detailed leaks have been made public, many of the details of which have already been confirmed.

Be Warned:

Movie studios will often include incorrect details in their scripts and make significant storyline changes to test screenings, so the information we have won’t be perfect. However, by observing the similarities between leaks and comparing them to the official trailer, we can paint a relatively clear picture of the plot.

Based on the evidence, Task Force X will be split into two groups.

  • The first will be sent to the island of Corto Maltese to either investigate “The Mayor” or assassinate General Silvio Luna.
  • The second squad will infiltrate Jotunheim – a Nazi-era prison and laboratory – where The Thinker is working. They’ll also find Starro – an alien parasitic hivemind — at the lab.
Here’s how the teams will be organized:

Team 1: Rick Flag, Harley Quinn, Boomerang, The Detachable Kid, Weasel, Javelin, Blackguard, Savant, and Mongal.

Team 2: Rick Flag, Bloodsport, Peacemaker, King Shark, Polka Dot Man, Ratcatcher 2, and Thinker.

The first team is ambushed on the beach immediately upon landing. Most of the leaks suggest that everyone will be killed during the initial assault, except Rick Flag and Harley Quinn.

Harley will be taken prisoner. We know she doesn’t die because we see her escape – while wielding Javelin’s javelin – just as Team 2 begins their attack in the trailer.

We can confidently eliminate the following betting options:
  • Rick Flagg (+4500),
  • Peacemaker (+2500),
  • Polka Dot Man (+1200),
  • Ratcatcher 2 (+700),
  • King Shark (+2700),
  • Bloodsport (+1600),
  • Harley Quinn (+10000), and
  • The Thinker (+650).

The trailers show all of them participating in scenes that take place after the beach battle.

  • We see Peacemaker, Bloodsport, and Ratcatcher 2 arguing while riding a bus across the island. John Cena’s character complains that they’re risking the mission to save Harley Quinn, presumably after successfully infiltrating Jotunheim lab (some leaks have Team 2 breaking into the lab while Team 1 is meant to assault The Mayor’s palace).
  • After rescuing Harley, we see her and Team 2 on a rooftop staging another mission. The Thinker is present in the scene. He’ll be taken hostage and forced to join Task Force X, according to some leaks. The way Flag, Quinn, and Bloodsport are threatening him in the trailer supports this theory.

So, the first character to die will probably be killed during the beach ambush. That leaves us with the following betting options:

  • Blackguard (+300)
  • Savant (+400)
  • Weasel (+500)
  • Javelin (+600)
  • Captain Boomerang (+700)

Blackguard

Pete Davidson’s character won’t survive the fight on the beach. He’s too big of a celebrity not to be in more of the trailer – he’s only shown walking with his teammates, presumably just after joining Task Force X, on their way to the mission.

Here’s what the different leaks have to say:

  • “Blackguard tries to surrender but is killed by the soldiers.”
  • “Pete Davidson character rats out the squad and immediately gets shot in the face starting the assault, everyone in squad A gets killed except for Harley.”
A common theme in all the leaks is one member of Team A trying to switch sides and being killed.

However, that kind of behavior fits Blackguard’s character best.

The only issue is whether anyone else will die first.

If Blackguard is ready to throw in the towel during the beach assault, could it be because he’s already watched some of his team die?

Weasel

Multiple leaks report that Weasel is the first to perish. Apparently, nobody asked him if he could swim, so he immediately drowns upon exiting the boat or helicopter.

A picture from the set of Suicide Squad shows what appears to be Sean Gunn – who plays Weasel – filming an underwater scene, which lends credence to this theory.

Sean Gunn filming an underwater scene?

However, in the movie version that Weasel seemingly dies first, he reportedly crawls onto the shore – having survived after all — in the end credit scene. If Weasel drowns before the beach battle but is shown after the credits, does that still count as dying first? I wouldn’t think so.

That said, his surprise return may have just been for the test screenings. He’s not shown in any trailer footage, besides the earliest scenes, when the team is being assembled in prison.

Captain Boomerang

Captain Boomerang is one of the most confusing characters. Here are the various fates predicted in the most promising leaks released so far:

  • One has him dying during the beach battle, decapitated by his signature weapon. However, the leak that says he dies by his own boomerang also claims that Javelin is the first to die.
  • Another claims he merely loses an arm – either during the beach ambush or at the hands of Starro.
  • They also say the character will appear to die on the beach, only to reveal later that the death was a fake-out. He will then rejoin the team, saying something to the effect of: “Like a Boomerang, I always come back!” So, if you bet on Captain Boomerang going first, don’t celebrate right away! He may return.
  • A fourth self-proclaimed leaker says Boomerang will double-cross the team at the beginning of the film but triple-cross the villains to help save the day, later on, landing back in Waller’s good graces.

A Redditor who claims to have attended a Suicide Squad test screening says the movie “ends with Ratcatcher II, Harley and Boomerang are back in cells as Waller walks back in and throws them a manila folder that says Mission Briefing.”

This would support the three outcomes in which Captain Boomerang survives – which is the direction I’m leaning.

James Gunn has been adamant about the film staying true to the original 1980s Suicide Squad comics created by John Ostrander. In that run, Boomerang plays a critical role as the longest-surviving, frequently recurring character.

We must also keep in mind that Captain Boomerang is one of the Flash’s main nemeses.

DC Films is currently producing a solo project for the speedster, so why would they eliminate such a key villain in Suicide Squad?

Lastly, there’s Jai Courtney’s — the actor playing Boomerang – prominent billing in the movie’s credits. The only names above Courtney’s are Margot Robbie, Idris Elba, John Cena, Joel Kinnaman, Sylvester Stallone, and Viola Davis.

I doubt the first character killed would be given such a prominent position.

Prediction:

Captain Boomerang will appear to die during the beach ambush, only to return during the third act – but missing an arm. He may flirt with switching sides for a time but will ultimately help Task Force X defeat Starro.

Javelin

Javelin is definitely one of the first characters to die in Suicide Squad. He’s barely featured in the trailer and doesn’t even appear in many leaks. One of the few times he’s mentioned in a spoiler, Javelin is the first to die:

“Led by Rick Flagg, they are sent to destroy Jotunheim and rescue Steve Agee. They lead a covert operation that goes well for the most part until they are ambushed by a secret military force. Javelin is the first to go after stepping on a landmine, in what is considered the most brutal scene in the movie, he is blown to meaty chunks.”

In the trailer, Harley Quinn escapes captivity just as Team B is about to breach the prison in which she was previously held. When she appears behind her would-be rescuers, Quinn is wielding her former teammate’s javelin.

Clearly, Javelin perishes, and Harley uses his confiscated weapon in her escape.

Savant

Finally, there’s Savant. The hacker/vigilante is expected to be one of Team A’s leaders, which doesn’t bode well for the character’s longevity. In addition to being shown receiving his explosive implant, Redditors spotted trailer footage that may hint at his demise.

Remember, each member of Task Force X has a small explosive implanted at the base of their skull. If they try to abandon the mission or switch sides, Amanda Waller can detonate it remotely.

The picture above shows where multiple characters are located on a control board.

In the next frame, we briefly see the panel from a second angle, this time with a red light is activated next to the spot Savant’s picture is located.

Might he give Waller a reason to terminate before anyone else on Team A is killed?

Leaked images from Suicide Squad’s storyboard make this theory seem plausible. In the pictures, Savant is shown running away from the action immediately after landing on the beach.

This is consistent with the spoilers that were proven mostly accurate when the trailer was released. In it, the leaker states that “Savant betrays the group,” and nothing more.

It’s possible that Waller merely primes the device as a threat to force him back into the action but doesn’t choose to detonate the explosive. However, it’s just as likely that she terminates Savant as a lesson to the others.

It wouldn’t be the Suicide Squad without some friendly fire, right?

My Picks:

I believe with narrowed the field of possible candidates to four:

  • Blackguard (+300)
  • Savant (+400)
  • Weasel (+500)
  • Javelin (+600)
If you want to play it safe, you can put equal amounts of money on three characters, and as long as one of your picks dies first, you’ll either turn a profit or break even.

I think Javelin, Blackguard, and Savant are your best bets. I looked it up, and weasels are decent swimmers. Why wouldn’t an animal in the same family as otters know how to swim?

Based on the on-set photo of Sean Gunn and the lack of appearances in the trailers, Weasel will almost certainly die during the first battle – but I don’t think they’ll kill him in the water. Wouldn’t that be included on the same storyboard that features Team A landing and Savant running away?

Blackguard is a known screw-up and will probably be one of the first two killed. However, I think he’ll watch a companion die first, choosing to surrender upon realizing the mission is a lost cause. Pete Davidson’s character may attempt a double-cross but will be shot without consideration.

Javelin seems like a useless character destined to step on a landmine or get shot immediately after bragging about his Olympic pedigree.

That’s why I’m ranking my favorite picks in the following order:

  1. Javelin (+600)
  2. Blackguard (+300)
  3. Savant (+400)

Will Poison Ivy Make a Cameo?

American Odds

  • Matchup Odds
  • Yes+1000
  • No-4000

Despite everything leaked about the Suicide Squad reboot, there have been no mentions of other prominent DC characters. Apparently, there’s only a single mention of Batman and the Justice League.

Plus, based on everything we know, I don’t see where Poison Ivy would fit into this film.

Over/Under – “The Suicide Squad’ Rotten Tomatoes Score (Opening Weekend)

American Odds

  • Matchup Odds
  • Over 53%+100
  • Under 53% -140

The Rotten Tomatoes “Tomatometer” is a score formulated by averaging critics’ reviews. The audience score is not included.

The 2016 adaptation of The Suicide Squad scored an abysmal 26%.

Although, in fairness, that may not be the best comparison when determining whether the reboot’s Tomatometer score will eclipse 53%.

Much has been made about James Gunn taking over the franchise, so let’s see how his two Guardians of the Galaxy titles performed:

  • Guardians of the Galaxy (2014) – 91%
  • Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 (2017) – 85%

As expected, they were both enormously popular with movie critics.

I anticipate a similar comedic tone for The Suicide Squad, only with more violence. The over-the-top gore will cost it a few points, but Gunn’s work should still outperform previous DC films.

I’m taking “Over 53%” at +100.

Will Peacemaker (John Cena) Say or Make the “You Can’t See Me” Motion?

American Odds

  • Matchup Odds
  • Yes+300
  • No-500

John Cena wants desperately to be the next Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson. Like his predecessor, Cena became the biggest superstar in the WWE before pivoting towards Hollywood and acting.

I don’t think he’s looking to remind people of his wrestling character by delivering his WWE character’s catchphrases and hand motions on the big screen – especially not in a massive comic book franchise like Suicide Squad.

I’ll bet the farm that John Cena won’t want to say “You Can’t See Me” or recreate his famous hand gesture any more than James Gunn would like him to.

I must take “No” at –500 here.
