Welcome in to the last DFS article of the 2020-2021 season – the DraftKings Showdown slate preview for Super Bowl Sunday. In a season where we didn’t even know if we’d have football, making it to the finish line for one last DFS slate makes it that much more exciting – enjoy it FootClan!
We’ve got an enticing matchup between the NFC champion Tampa Bay Buccaneers and the defending Super Bowl champion Kansas City Chiefs. Kansas City travels to Tampa to take on the Bucs as 3-point favorites in a matchup that features a healthy 56.0-point over/under. This matchup, probably more than any other Showdown slate in the 2020-2021 season, features a ton of ambiguity. We have uncertainty in workloads for both backfields, injury question marks regarding the pass catchers on both sides, namely in Sammy Watkins (Calf) and Antonio Brown (knee), and some potential, albeit mild, weather concerns as this game projects to at least have some rainfall as of the writing of this article. With all of these uncertainties at play, I would encourage those of you who are building GPP lineups to embrace the variance associated with one game slates and try to get creative in lineup building. That said, let’s break down my favorite captain selections, flex plays for cash games, and some GPP targets.
Captain Selections
Patrick Mahomes $18,000
The most expensive captain on the entire slate, Mahomes is likely to come with elevated roster percentage in tournaments, but it’s for good reason. Mahomes is actually a bit of a value here, as he’s priced almost $800 below his season-long average in Showdown slates, so I’m fine getting up to Mahomes in cash games given the safety he presents. The Chiefs throw at a 62% rate in neutral situations and Tampa Bay hosts the NFL’s top-rated run defense in DVOA metrics. As a result, opposing teams are throwing at a league-high 65% against the Bucs, simply because this run defense is so good. Volume + talent + elite pass catchers make Mahomes the highest projected player on the slate but understand, he will be popular.
