College Hoops Parlay Of The Day 2-28-21

Wow, what a day it was yesterday in college hoops! With nearly all of the top-25 in action yesterday, we saw most of the best teams in the country play, and oh boy, were there fireworks! The headliner came to us from Lawrence, Kansas, where the Kansas Jayhawks handed the Baylor Bears their first loss of the season, blowing out Baylor 71-58. While the loss was shocking to most of you, had you read my article last week, where I highlighted the fact that Kansas was being criminally underrated and had a shot at beating the Bears and are absolutely a Final Four caliber team, you would have been smelling the upset special.

Baylor wasn’t the only team to get upset as the schedule was loaded with unexpected results. USC lost at Utah, Tennessee lost at Auburn, despite the Tigers having to play without superstar freshman Sharife Cooper, and OSU won in Norman against the Oklahoma Sooners, behind a career high 40-point explosion from Cade Cunningham. Other ranked teams that tasted defeat yesterday included Florida State, who lost on the road in Chapel Hill, to a surging North Carolina Tar Heels team. Texas lost at Texas Tech, Wisconsin lost at home to Illinois, and Xavier beat 13th ranked Creighton, a win they had to have if they wanted a real shot at an at-large bid.

While today’s college hoops schedule certainly lacks the star power of yesterday’s slate, that doesn’t mean there won’t be plenty of action on the hardwood. The day kicks off with a blockbuster matchup from Columbus, Ohio, where the Ohio State Buckeyes play host to the Iowa Hawkeyes, with both teams trying to bounce back from recent losses. Other ranked teams to play today include Villanova traveling to Hinkle Fieldhouse to play the Butler Bulldogs and Houston hosting South Florida. With that, let’s jump right into today’s parlay picks!

Point Spread Parlay

Not all parlays are the same. In this first section, we are going to focus on point spread parlays. A point spread parlay is a parlay bet where all of the games bet are point spreads, and you will have to lay a little juice on each bet. A standard 3-team point spread parlay will payout 6-1, a 4-teamer pays out 11-1, and a 10-teamer pays out a whopping 720-1! As you can see, the payouts can get really big, really fast, on point spread parlays!

Loyola-Maryland Greyhounds at Navy Midshipmen (-3)

Navy is a really solid small conference basketball team. The Patriot League doesn’t generally produce top level teams, but the Midshipmen are a solid 146th on Kenpom and are neck and neck with Colgate for the Patriot League crown. They played last night at Loyola-Maryland is the first half of this back-to-back, and they dispatched the Greyhounds fairly easily, coasting to a 6-point win.

Now that the series has swung back to Navy’s home floor, I don’t see any reason that the Midshipmen aren’t going to be able to play as well as they did last night on the road and cover this -3-point spread. Navy hasn’t played at home in almost a full month, and their 7-1 home record this season tells me that they are going to be happy to be back home in Annapolis. Kenpom has the Midshipmen winning this game by seven points, which makes this line very undervalued. I am taking Navy laying a little wood.

Iowa Hawkeyes at Ohio State Buckeyes (-2.5)

Ohio State was making a case as the top team in the Big 10 before dropping their last two games. It’s hard to fault them too much for those losses, though, as they lost at home to Michigan, and the Wolverines are looking like they just might be the best team in the nation right now, and they lost at Michigan State, to a Spartans team that is figuring things out here late in the season. Prior to those losses, the Buckeyes had won ten out of their previous eleven games, including a win at Iowa earlier this month.

Iowa snapped out of their midseason funk by winning four straight games before losing their last game at Michigan. While we can all agree that Luka Garza is a freak of nature and nearly impossible to stop, if the Hawkeye sharpshooters aren’t on point, they can be very inconsistent. The scary part about this particular matchup though, for Iowa, is that when these teams played at Carver-Hawkeye Arena, they shot a very strong 43% from three, and hit 14 shot from the perimeter, and still lost. Iowa played their best game, at home, and couldn’t win, and that makes me feel like they are going to lose on the road today as well, as Ohio State is just a bad matchup for them. We are going to sweat out the line until the very end, but Ohio State wins and covers at home.

Albany Great Danes at Hartford Hawks (-1)

This game is the four/five matchup in the America East Conference tournament and will be the first time this year these two teams have played. There isn’t a lot to separate these teams, besides the fact that the America East tournament just happens to be played out this year in Hartford, Connecticut, the home of the Hawks. We don’t see many large conferences play true home games for conference tournaments, but the practice is common in small leagues like the AEC. I’m not sure that either of these teams are going to have a shot against Vermont or UMBC when it comes to winning this tournament and punching their dance card, but in a must-win game for both teams, I am taking the home team.

Money Line Magic

This next type of parlay we are going to look at is an all money line parlay. With these types of bets, you don’t care about points spreads, it is just who wins or loses the games that matter. Want to load up on a bunch of favorites and get paid when they all win? Do you smell a couple of big upsets? Parlay those together on a money line parlay, and you can get paid big!

Pitt Panthers at NC State Wolfpack (-315)

Two weeks ago, the NC State Wolfpack was left for dead. They had lost eight out of ten games and were not considered even a fringe bubble team in the ACC. But something has awoken in the Wolfpack since then, as they have won three straight games, all coming on the road no less, and all of the sudden, they are playing themselves into the bubble conversation. NC State won at Virginia, the toughest place to play in the league, in their last game, and with three winnable games left on their schedule, I could see them making a run to the tournament if they stay hot.

Pitt is on the exact opposite side of that spectrum, as they are in free fall right now, with losses in seven out of their last eight games. One of those losses came at home to NC State in a tight contest, and it looks like Jeff Capel’s team is ready for this painful season to be over. The Panthers seem to find a way to always keep games close, they have lost each of their last four games by single digits, so I don’t want to play around with the point spread in this one. Instead, I will back the red-hot Wolfpack and expect a competitive game where NC State finds a way to gut out a home floor win.

Western Illinois Leathernecks at Oral Roberts Golden Eagles (-420)

There is a significant talent gap between the top half of the Summit League and the bottom half. The top four teams in the league, North Dakota State, South Dakota State, South Dakota, and Oral Roberts, are all ranked 180th or better on Kenpom. The bottom four teams in the league are all ranked 293rd or worse. You very rarely see this type of a gap in a major or even a mid-major conference, but in leagues like the Summit, you can have mismatches.

This is one of those mismatches. The Leathernecks don’t have a single win over any of those top teams in the league, and while they did manage to string together a five-game winning streak before losing last night to Oral Roberts, all of those wins came to teams ranked 298th or worse. WIU did a respectable job last night of hanging with the Golden Eagles, but I just don’t see them finding a way to actually win. They might be able to cover the line like they did last night in the series opener, but they aren’t going to win the game. Oral Roberts on the money line is the play.

Lafayette Leopards (-157) at Lehigh Mountain Hawks

The Patriot League scheduling has been a mess this season, which has made it hard to properly rate teams. Let’s take Lafayette, for example. The Leopards are a respectable 8-5, having only played conference games. But all eight of those wins have come over Lehigh (twice), Bucknell (twice), or Loyola-Maryland (four wins). Lehigh is in the same boat as they have only played five different teams this year, and with their tougher schedule, they have a much worse record.

This will be the 4th matchup of the year between these two teams, with Lehigh winning the first game of the series and Lafayette winning the next two. This series has played out with the home team winning each game, but I see the Leopards bucking that trend tonight and picking up the road victory. The Patriot League holds a rare distinction this season, in that home teams have a losing record in league play. That is never going to happen in a power conference, but I will follow that trend in this one and expect Lafayette to leave with the win.

Michigan State Spartans (+120) at Maryland Terrapins

I called this Michigan State run a month ago, as Tom Izzo always seems to have things figured out by March. Izzo doesn’t get the first-round NBA talent like some of his other fellow Hall of Fame coaches do, but he knows how to win basketball games, especially late in the season. The Spartans have won three straight games and five out of seven and have gone from a bubble team to a team that I see as safely in the field of 68. In just the last week, MSU has wins over Illinois, Indiana, and Ohio State, and a win over Maryland could be an elimination game, as both teams are sitting close to the cut line and can ill afford a loss.

Maryland has done a respectable job here late in the regular season as well, as they have won four straight, but three of those four games came at home, with two coming at home over Nebraska, which is basically a bye week for Big 10 teams this year. The Terrapins have home losses in league play to Ohio State, Iowa, Michigan, Wisconsin, and Rutgers, and surprisingly enough, Maryland has been better on the road, than at home, in Big 10 play. I think Izzo finds a way to stay hot and leads his Spartans to yet another upset, this time at Maryland.

North Dakota State Bison at South Dakota Coyotes (+105)

This is just a bad line. South Dakota is undefeated at home in Summit League play, and they beat North Dakota State last night at home, 80-71. Kenpom has them winning this game by a couple of points, and when the books opened the line at SD State -2-points, it felt like a sharp number. But since then, the betting public has been hammering ND State, moving the number a whopping four points towards the Bison.

After starting out their conference play season by going 8-1, the Bison are stumbling to the finish line and have lost four of six. North Dakota State is just 4-7 in true road games this season, with none of those wins coming against top-200 teams. I am going to high five the betting public in this one, as I get to back the Coyotes as home dogs when I don’t deserve it. A home dog in league play, and I get to fade the public? Oh, yeah, let me get some of that!
