NFL Week 12 Weather Conditions (Fantasy Football)

This week is about guiding your fantasy teams through the attrition around the league. Luckily the weather is mostly cooperative, but we’re going to see a few games played in frigid weather. We’re also going to need to keep an eye on the weather in Philadelphia and Pittsburgh to see how it develops.

*Updated to reflect QB situation in Denver and more current weather forecasts.*

This article will be updated leading up to the games and here on Sunday morning with a final update around 12:30 pm ET.

Fantasy Impact: Denver already played a game in frigid temperatures earlier this year against Kansas City. Patrick Mahomes only threw for 200 yards and a lone TD in what turned out to be a blowout. Drew Lock completed 24 passes on 40 attempts for 254 yards with zero TDs and two interceptions. Lock’s fantasy day was saved by a rushing TD. Melvin Gordon and Philip Lindsay combined for 147 yards and one TD rushing. Albert Okwuegbunam and Noah Fant each had seven targets, which they converted into 10 receptions for 98 yards. No other Denver player did much of note. I think these are probably the types of numbers we’re going to see this week for Denver against a defense that just shut down Atlanta.

With Drew Brees out, it looks like another Taysom Hill start following an efficient albeit limited Week 11 passing line of 23 pass attempts for 18 completions and 233 yards. His 23 yards and two TDs rushing made him the stuff of legend in leagues where he had TE eligibility. The cold only reinforces a low pass-volume game plan with a reliance on the three-pronged rushing attack of Alvin Kamara, Latavius Murray, and Hill.

New Orleans was able to chip away offensively with Kamara and Murray splitting carries with nearly identical production in Week 11. Kamara managed a rushing TD on 12 carries for 45 yards, but was held without a catch. I can’t imagine Kamara goes another game with zero production in the passing game, but his upside is capped with Hill stealing work at the goal line and Murray splitting carries. Murray is a good desperation start if your RB corps has been decimated by injuries and COVID-related issues. What little work New Orleans pass catchers saw last week was almost entirely focused on Michael Thomas who received targets on 12 of 24 attempts from Hill. The next highest target total went to Emmanuel Sanders with five that he converted into four receptions for 66 yards.

If by chance Denver manages to get an early lead, it’s hard to tell if New Orleans would look to Jameis Winston. It’s also hard to tell how well Winston would handle the cold since he’s never been in a game played below 41°. I think New Orleans would stick it out with Hill, but if Hill struggles Winston might be a good waiver pickup just in case New Orleans decides to switch it up at QB with matchups against Atlanta in Week 13 and Minnesota in Week 16 depending on Drew Brees‘ timeline to return.

(Update: Shortly after this was written, all of Denver’s QBs were placed on the COVID-19 list and all I could think about for this update was a derivation of a few lines from the movie Billy Madison:

“Mr. Ludwig, what you’ve just said is one of the most insanely idiotic things I have ever heard. At no point in your rambling, incoherent response were you even close to anything that could be considered a rational thought. Everyone that saw that is now dumber for having read it. I award the Denver QBs no fantasy points, and may God have mercy on the souls of the Denver pass catchers.”

Good luck this week, I got nothing else to say.)

Kansas City Chiefs at Tampa Bay Buccaneers
4:25 PM ET

Monday, November 30th, 2020:

Seattle Seahawks at Philadelphia Eagles
8:15 PM ET
LINCOLN FINANCIAL FIELD
PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA

Temp: 59°
Precipitation: None
Wind: 9 mph
Wind Gusts: 25 mph

Fantasy Impact: The weather looks fine for this game, but heavy winds and rain are expected to hit Philadelphia earlier in the day on Monday. We need to keep an eye on the weather just in case those storms hit a few hours later than expected.

Tuesday, December 1st, 2020:

Baltimore Ravens at Pittsburgh Steelers
8:00 PM ET
HEINZ FIELD
PITTSBURGH, PENNSYLVANIA

Temp: 30°
Precipitation: Flurries
Wind: 13 mph
Wind Gusts: 26 mph

Fantasy Impact: The weather isn’t ideal, but the weather is the least of our concerns for this game. The impacts from COVID will have a far greater impact if this game even gets played. We’ll see about 1″ of snow during the course of the game, which shouldn’t have an affect. The bigger concern is the cold, but both teams are used to cold weather games. No fantasy impact.
