We did FootClan! We made it through Week 8. But before we move on completely, let’s examine how the targets are adding up through eight weeks. We had four players accumulate 70 targets through seven weeks, but a week later we have no players with 80. Stefon Diggs leads the way but couldn’t quite get there, sitting at 79 targets. When it comes to targets/game however we have four players averaging over ten targets/game. Davante Adams (11.6), Jamison Crowder (11.5), Keenan Allen (10.6), and DeAndre Hopkins (10.4) lead the way.
Let’s take a look at the most interesting target performances from windy Week 8.
Cooper Kupp – 21 targets, 11 rec
It took 61 pass attempts from Jared Goff, but Kupp now takes over as the player to see the most targets in a single game so far this season. The 21 he saw against Miami are the most in an NFL game since Week 10 of the 2015 season when Davante Adams also had 21. Oddly enough, Antonio Brown had 23 targets in the previous Week of the same season.
DK Metcalf – 15 targets, 12 rec
Metcalf finished as the WR1 on the week for the first time in his young career in Week 8, and he did it on the back of a career-high 15 targets. It came just one week after teammate Tyler Lockett had a similar WR1 outing. The duo currently sits as the WR2 and WR4 overall and while Lockett has four more targets on the season, Metcalf has the edge in fantasy points.
Alvin Kamara – 13 targets, 9 rec
It’s no shock to find Kamara featured in the Target Report yet again. He easily leads all running backs with 66 targets on the season. The next closest, Ezekiel Elliot, is 20 targets behind him. At his current pace, Kamara would finish the season with 151 targets, nine more than the NFL record for a running back set by Christian McCaffrey last season. That pace may slow down a bit once Michael Thomas returns, but not enough to concern fantasy managers.
Travis Kelce – 12 targets, 8 rec
Like Kamara holding down the top spot at his position, Travis Kelce remains the most targeted tight end in the NFL. The targets coming from Patrick Mahomes are, unsurprisingly, translating into the fantasy success we’ve come to expect from Kelce. He’s finished at a top-ten fantasy tight end seven out of eight weeks with two TE1 overall performances, including in Week 8.
Michael Gallup – 12 targets, 7 rec
After seeing double-digit targets in five separate games last season, Gallup didn’t hit that mark this season until Week 8. Apparently, it just took Ben DiNucci at quarterback to finally hyper-target Gallup in 2020. It only amounted to seven catches for 61 yards, not exactly what fantasy managers had in mind when drafting Gallup a few short months ago.
Brandon Aiyuk – 11 targets, 8 rec
The 11 targets for Aiyuk were a new high water mark for the rookie wideout, and seven of them came in the fourth quarter from Nick Mullens. Those seven targets alone turned into five catches for 60 yards and a touchdown. It appears Mullens will be once again starting in place of the injured Jimmy Garoppolo and he’s likely to keep targeting Aiyuk while Deebo Samuel and George Kittle could both be out with their own injuries.
Anthony Miller – 11 targets, 8 rec
After putting up a few big target, and fantasy, performances in the second half of last season, Miller has been disappointing for fantasy football for most of the season. In Week 8 however, he nearly doubled his highest single-game target total of the season; his previous season-high was six targets all the way back in Week 1. He also played on a season-high 76% of Chicago’s offensive snaps. It’s only one game, but Miller should at least be on your fantasy radar moving forward.
Corey Davis – 10 targets, 8 rec
Don’t look now, but Corey Davis is putting up consistent fantasy performances. He’s seen ten targets in back-to-back weeks and is averaging 7.8 targets/game, the exact same amount as teammate A.J. Brown. In fact, their reception and yardage numbers are nearly identical on the season. It appears that Ryan Tannehill and the Titans offense may be able to support two fantasy wideouts, though it seems to have come at the expense of Jonnu Smith, who’s only seen eight total targets over his last three games.
T.J. Hockenson – 10 targets, 7 rec
Hockenson became the latest tight end to notch his first double-digit target game of the season in Week 8. He’s averaging just 5.8 targets/game on the season, which doesn’t sound like much but is good enough for tenth most among tight ends. He’s the most targeted player on the Lions and his lead is likely to expand now that Kenny Golladay is set to miss more time with another injury.
Jakobi Meyers – 10 targets, 6 rec
With Julian Edelman and N’Keal Harry both missing this week, Meyers became New England’s de facto number one wideout. He capitalized on the opportunity by setting career-highs in both targets and receptions. It isn’t exactly a high-octane passing offense with Cam Newton at the helm, but there’s a good chance that Meyers will remain the top target in the offense next week. That could make him a sneaky deep play in PPR formats against the hapless New York Jets.
Dallas Goedert – 1 target, 1 rec
Goedert returned from injured reserve after missing the last four games and saw plenty of time on the field, playing on 84% of Philadephia’s offensive snaps. Unfortunately, he only accumulated one target in the game, which he caught for a 15 yard gain. Better fantasy days surely lie ahead for Goedert, who was the TE1 all the way back in Week 1.
