The future Hall of Famer is hanging up the whistle after 600+ wins at Penn, Temple, and La Salle. The word legendary gets thrown around a lot, but for all intents and purposes Dunph is that.
Look at this resume:
Fran Dunphy stepped up at his alma mater, La Salle, when they were looking for a head coach. The 76-year-old made sure his staff got taken care of more than he did. Has won over 600 games, a combined 16 conference titles, 4 league COTY honors. Philadelphia LEGEND, terrific human.

The guy was a legend on Temple’s campus. He was the coach the last time the Owls were in the Tournament. There was also the occasional story about him buying a student’s lunch if he was sitting in the booth behind them at the Draught Horse or in Maxi’s. The guy was aces from everyone you talked to about him. My favorite Fran Dunphy story is Kinker and I interviewed him last year about the Big 5 Classic and the link to get in wasn’t working. We tried everything. New links, different platforms, the works. So someone in the athletic department at La Salle jumped in the stream and FaceTime’d him while reading out every single letter in the URL as he typed each one by one – which was like 30 characters long. He could’ve just told us to fuck off or rescheduled after it took 30+ minutes to get going, but he was cool enough to give us his time and tell us some awesome stories about the Big 5 and Philly basketball.
That’s the kind of guy Fran Dunphy was.
I’ll never forget when he had the Owls take the subway down to the Wells Fargo Center and then beat the piss out of #10 Kansas by 25:

Shout out to him for also securing the bag with a lifetime deal via GoExplorers.com. You put that much effort into Philly Hoops you deserve it:
Philadelphia, PA – Legendary La Salle University head men’s basketball coach Fran Dunphy, ’70, HON ’20, the all-time winningest coach in Philadelphia Big 5 history, will retire from his position at the conclusion of the 2024-25 season. Dunphy will assume the role of special assistant to the president at La Salle and has agreed to a lifetime contract with the University for that role. A national search to determine Dunphy’s successor will begin immediately. La Salle has partnered with Elevate Talent and Kyle Bowlsby to ensure a smooth transition for the basketball program.
