Super Bowl 59 Props: A Look at the Eagles’ and Chiefs’ Defenses

Defensive player props come into more of the sports betting focus as the games become more important.

Because we’re talking about Super Bowl 59, of course there’s every angle to bet on from the defensive side of the ball.

There will most likely be a clear directive among defensive player prop bettors for Sunday’s clash between the Kansas City Chiefs and Philadelphia Eagles in New Orleans. Zack Baun and Jalen Carter should have an increased focus on the Eagles’ side, while Chris Jones and George Karlaftis should be the top targets among Chiefs defenders.

To keep it simple here, linemen and linebackers are the best defensive players to target because they’re more involved on every snap.

Sure, there are interception props for defensive backs, but it’s more difficult to gauge tackles props when Quinyon Mitchell and Trent McDuffie could have their respective parts of the field on lockdown.

Baun’s tackles and assists prop sits at over/under 10.5, Carter sits at 3.5 tackles/assists and is +130 to record a sack, Jones is +125 to record a sack at BetMGM and +135 at bet365, and Karlaftis has the lowest odds of any player to record a sack at -125 at bet365 and +115 at BetMGM.

Karlaftis and Josh Sweat come into the Super Bowl as their team leaders in sacks with eight. Sweat is +150 to record a sack.

Baun and Nick Bolton are the only active players on the two rosters with 100+ tackles. Nakobe Dean is the third member of the 100-tackle club, but he is obviously hurt. Baun owns the lowest odds across the board to have the most tackles/assists in the entire game. That’s a +175 price at BetMGM.

It’s hard to imagine anyone recording more tackles/assists than Baun in a single game. Only three other players have a tackles/assists over/under higher than 6.5. Oren Burks and the Chiefs pair of Bolton and Drue Tranquill are the others above 6.5.

The angle to support a Chiefs player to have the most tackles/assists is the Eagles’ game script, which should feature a ton of Saquon Barkley. In that case, Bolton, Tranquill and Co. in the Kansas City front seven should have more opportunities to load up on tackles than Baun, even if he’s all over the place.

The long shot pick to have the most tackles/assists is Chiefs safety Justin Reid at +1600. Reid had 12 tackles/assists in the first two games of this postseason. He had 16 tackles/assists across the last two Super Bowls. I’d at least look into the over on his tackles/assists prop at 5.5.

As for the rest of the defensive backs, it’s hard to find a true angle. Jalen Hurts has not thrown an interception in seven straight postseason games. Patrick Mahomes has one interception across his last 10 playoff appearances.

BUT, it’s worth noting that five of Mahomes’ eight postseason interceptions and two of his three two-pick playoff games occurred in the Super Bowl.

You could just go ahead and bet Mahomes to throw an interception, but if you want larger odds at New Jersey sports betting apps, look to C.J. Gardner-Johnson to record an interception at +450. He has the most interceptions on both rosters and is the best player to look at for that prop.
