Lamar Jackson cut a frustrated figure after the Baltimore Ravens’ agonizing defeat to the Buffalo Bills.
Jackson and the Ravens suffered a heartbreaking 27-25 defeat to the Bills in Sunday’s divisional round clash at Highmark Stadium, eliminating them from this season’s playoffs.
The Bills and quarterback Josh Allen took better care of the football in the snowy conditions in Upstate New York while the Ravens were left to rue costly mistakes and turnovers.
Jackson turned the ball over twice, with a first half interception and a first half fumble.
However, the MVP favorite almost single-handedly brought Baltimore back from an 11-point halftime deficit, giving the visitor’s the chance to tie the game late on when he drove 88 yards on eight plays in less than two minutes.
Baltimore needed a two-point conversion to tie the game up at 27-27, and executed a perfect play for Mark Andrews who was wide open near the far pylon.
However, the tight end dropped the easy 2-point conversion catch, effectively ending the game.
Baltimore attempted an onside kick, but it was recovered by Bills cornerback Rasul Douglas, sealing Buffalo’s win and an AFC Championship matchup with the Kansas City Chiefs.
After the game, Jackson bemoaned his team’s lack of ball security, both from himself and his teammates.
“Just hold onto the f***ing ball,” Jackson said. “I’m sorry for my language, but this s*** is annoying. I’m tired of this s***”
Andrews received a lot of heat on social media for his dropped catch, but Jackson was keen to highlight his own mistakes.
One of his fumbles in the first half was particularly costly as it led to a Bills touchdown drive.
“First half I had two costly turnovers,” Jackson told reporters. “Me not holding the safety, me just ignoring the coverage, me knowing it was man (coverage) threw a BS interception. … Every time we’re in a situation like this, turnovers play a factor, penalties play a factor.
“Tonight, it was the turnovers. We can’t have that [expletive]. That’s why we lost the game because as you can see, we’re moving the ball wonderfully, it’s just hold onto the [expletive] ball. Sorry for my language, but this [expletive] is annoying. I’m tired of this [expletive], man.”
The 28-year-old finished 18-of-25 for 254 yards and two touchdowns to go along with an interception. He also rushed for 39 yards on six attempts.
Two-time MVP Jackson is one of the league’s greatest quarterbacks but the narrative around him is that he often comes up short in the postseason.
During the regular season this year, he threw for 4,172 yards and 41 touchdowns with just four interceptions.
However, the playoffs have been a major stumbling block for the signal caller, who now holds a 3-5 playoff record in eight postseason starts.
For a quarterback who usually looks after the ball so well, Jackson has been decidedly more error prone in the playoffs, committing 11 turnovers against just 13 touchdowns.
He’ll likely face a long offseason batting off questions about his inability to get it done on the big stage, while the Bills will face the Chiefs next Sunday with a Super Bowl LIX berth on the line.
