Renato Moicano has pocketed more money than Islam Makhachev despite being on the losing end of the UFC 311 main event.
Moicano stepped in to face the UFC lightweight champion on one day’s notice after Arman Tsarukyan was forced out of the fight with a back injury.
The Brazilian MMA star was originally set to face Beneil Dariush on the card but was boosted up the bill after making championship weight on Friday.
Makhachev went on to make quick work of Moicano, submitting the No.10 ranked lightweight in the opening round.
Before the fight, Makhachev was joint for the most lightweight title defences in UFC history with three, alongside his mentor Khabib Nurmagomedov, Benson Henderson and BJ Penn.
His win over Moicano put him clear of the pack with four.
It also further cemented his place at the top of the UFC pound-for-pound rankings – a position he has hung onto for 439 days.
And yet despite all of this, he earned $50,000 less than Moicano on fight night.
The California State Athletic Commission revealed that Moicano earned a $250,000 payday for taking the opportunity late.
Meanwhile, the champion pocketed $200,000 as a flat fee.
Salaries that are made public by the commission do not reflect any off-the-book bonuses or pay-per-view cuts paid out separately by the UFC so Makhachev could have had his earnings boosted.
However, he did not receive a Performance of the Night or Fight of the Night bonus for his efforts so he won’t have seen a raise through those means.
Merab Dvalishvili and Umar Nurmagomedov were awarded the Fight of the Night bonus for their five-round barnburner in the co-main event while Jiri Prochazka and Jailton Almeida earned Performance of the Night bonuses.
All four fighters receive an extra $50,000 on top of their purses as a result.
Dvalishvili was already earning $500,000 for his first UFC bantamweight title defence after snatching the belt from Sean O’Malley in September while Nurmagomedov took home a $100,000 base salary plus his bonus.
Former UFC light heavyweight champion Prochazka received $200,000 in show money but ended up banking $300,000 thanks to his $50,000 win bonus and $50,000 performance of the night bonus.
His opponent, Hill only got his hands on his $200,000 base salary after getting stopped in the third round by Prochazka.
Meanwhile, Jailton Almeida earned $110,000 plus a $110,000 win bonus and his $50,000 Performance of the Night cut for blasting out Sergey Spivak in the opening round.
