Hurricanes -1.5 (+136)
The Hurricanes have dominated the season series against the Rangers. In 3 regular season games head to head, Carolina has won all 3 in regulation by a combined score of 11-4. That is an average win by 2.33 goals. If these teams hold to or close to those averages, the Hurricanes have a great chance to cover -1.5 yet again. The +136 to do so brings even better value to an already appealing pick. In addition to the Hurricanes dominating the Rangers this season as a whole, the spot is made better for Carolina given New York’s recent form.
The Rangers enter this game having lost 3 out of their last 4 games as part of 12 losses in their last 18. Also included in that 18-game span is 5 losses in their last 8 games. The Rangers lost those games by a combined 14 goals for an average loss by 2.8 goals. Lately, when the Rangers lose, they lose big. Things will not get any easier playing a Hurricanes team that has had their number all year, has won 8 out of their last 9 home games, and will be playing with a little bit of urgency to break out of a 4-game losing streak. Carolina is the better team, will be hungry, and can capitalize on a Rangers team that is ready for this season to be over.
Over 5.5 (-125)
High totals have been trending for both the Rangers and Hurricanes lately. The over has hit in 6 out of the Rangers’ last 7 games, as well as in 5 out of the Hurricanes’ last 6 games. In their respective last 10 games, the over is 15-5 in those combined 20 games. Also over those respective last 10 games, both teams are 4-5-1. Whether win or lose, totals have been climbing in Carolina and New York games thanks to volatility on both sides of the puck.
The Rangers just exploded for a 9-goal performance over a struggling Islanders team. The night before, the Rangers allowed an 8-spot to the Flyers who rank 23rd in the NHL in goals scored per game. New York has either scored or allowed 5+ goals in 7 out of their last 9 games. Their average game total in that span is 7.89 goals. Trends are similar for Carolina as they have scored or allowed 5 goals in 5 out of their last 6 games and in 7 out of their last 10. The pure matchup and recent trends here look good for another over.
Taylor Hall anytime goalscorer (+260)
Taylor Hall has had a bit of a revitalization in his game with the Hurricanes in the last month or so. Though he still has plenty of good game left, Hall did not have much to play for in Chicago. Now he is back on a true Stanley Cup contender and has shown good form recently. Hall has been held pointless during Carolina’s current losing streak. Prior to that, he had 12 points in 10 games, including a hat trick during that span.
The Hurricanes are a week away from playing in their first round matchup of the Stanley Cup playoffs. While they don’t ‘need’ this win per se, they do not want to limp into the postseason in a vulnerable spot from a losing streak or losing run. The Hurricanes will bring a solid effort in this game and will lean on their top players to get the team back in the win column. Taylor Hall is on the second line with Jack Roslovic and Andrei Svechnikov, as well as the top power play with Sebastian Aho, Brent Burns, Seth Jarvis, and Jackson Blake. Hall is one of a few players that will be leaned on, and will have a good chance to produce against a struggling Rangers team.
