NBA Picks January 6: Grizzlies Host Mavericks in Western Conference Clash

The calendar has reached 2025 and the NBA regular season is nearing the halfway point. Teams are looking to gain momentum over the next month for a post-All-Star Game push toward the playoffs. There are nine games scheduled for January 6. I will look at four of those games with hate Grizzlies hosting the Mavericks in the featured game.

Dallas Mavericks versus Memphis Grizzlies

Memphis enters with the second-best record in the Western Conference and Dallas is fifth. The Mavericks have struggled lately, losers of their last three and “ice cold down” on the Team Strength Oscillator. The Grizzlies have fared better, going 4-2 over the last six and “average up” status. The teams are trending on opposite sides of the “over/under” line with a score prediction of an 18-point win by the Grizzlies with 63 percent confidence. Dallas won at home against Memphis by a 121-116 score on December 3. Overall, Memphis has a scoring differential edge of +9.1 to +5.2.  Dallas is a solid 10-9 on the road, but Memphis has one of the best home records in the league at 14-4. I like the Grizzlies in a game “over” the line.

Phoenix Suns versus Philadelphia 76ers

Both teams are looking in from outside of the playoff picture. The Suns are 3-7 over the last ten and “dead” on the Team Strength Oscillator. Philadelphia has dropped two straight but is 10-5 in the previous 15 and “average” status. The 76ers have a +9 to +7 edge on the Power Ranks Indicator but the Suns have a -1.8 to -4.1 scoring differential edge. The teams are trending on opposite sides of the “over/under” line. The 76ers are 5-9 at home, the same as the Suns’ record on the road. Phoenix won the first game between the teams by two points at home on November 4. I like the 76ers this time around in a game decided by five points or less but pass on the over/under bet.

Orlando Magic versus New York Knicks

The two teams enter third and fourth in the Eastern Conference. The Knicks are “burning hot” versus “average down” on the Team Strength Oscillator and +27 to +18 on the Power Ranks Indicator. The teams are trending evenly between over and under the line over the last 12 with a score prediction of 117-106 in favor of the Knicks with 75 percent confidence. Both teams are consistently performing with regards to their favorite/underdog status. The Knicks are 11-4 at home versus 7-11 on the road for the Magic and a scoring differential edge of +8.3 to +2.0. The Knicks have won the previous three games between the teams this season. Despite being close in the standings, the Knicks have the Magic’s number and I expect that to continue in a game “over” the line.

Miami Heat versus Sacramento Kings

The Kings are four games under .500 and 12th in the Western Conference while the Heat is 17-15 and 6th in the Eastern Conference. Sacramento has won two straight after a previous four game skid and Miami is coming off a loss but 4-2 over the last six. The teams are trending on opposite sides of the over/under line making that bet a pass in this game. Miami has a narrow scoring differential edge of +2.1 to +1.3 and a 7-9 road record versus 8-12 home record for the Kings.  Sacramento won by a point on the road in their first meeting and I see much the same this time around. Go with the Kings by four points or less.
