NBA Picks January 20: Warriors Host Celtics in Featured Game

The midpoint of the NBA season is quickly approaching. Teams look for an edge heading towards the All-Star break and hope to make a run toward the playoffs. There are eight games scheduled for Monday, January 20. I will examine four games with the Celtics on the road versus the Warriors in the headlined matchup.

Boston Celtics versus Golden State Warriors

The Warriors look to get back over .500, sitting at 20-20 on the season. Boston is second in the Eastern Conference, six behind the Cleveland Cavaliers. Boston is “average up” versus “average down” on the Team Strength Oscillator and +24 to +10 on the Power Ranks Indicator. The teams have been involved in games “under” the line in all but three of the last 12. Boston has a +8.8 to +0.3 scoring differential edge and 14-5 on the road versus 10-10 at home for Golden State. Boston is showing far more stability, coming in at +18 to +4 on the Team Volatility Oscillator. Boston is a road favorite with odds of 1.5269 to 2.616 and I like them to win this one in a game “under” the line.

Minnesota Timberwolves versus Memphis Grizzlies

Memphis comes into the game 3rd in the Western Conference and Minnesota is 8th. Both teams are “average” on the Team Strength Oscillator and +21 to +15 on the Power Ranks Indicator. Memphis is a slight favorite with odds of 1.881 to 1.982 and is 15-5 at home versus 11-10 on the road for Minnesota. The teams are trending in games “over” the line with a score prediction of 121-100 in favor of the Grizzlies with nearly 77 percent confidence. Memphis won by a 127-125 score in the first games between the teams this season.  The Timberwolves are far less consistent regarding their favorite/underdog status. Memphis won on the road as an underdog last time and I believe they will win by six to 10 points this time in a game “over” the line.

Atlanta Hawks versus New York Knicks

The Hawks have won three of their last four and “burning hot” status while the Knicks are 3-3 over the last six and “average” on the Team Strength Oscillator. The Knicks are favorites with odds of 1.240 to 4.2 and are 3rd in the Eastern Conference versus 7th for the Hawks. The teams have been involved in games “over” the line in eight of the last 12 and the Knicks have a +6.4 to -1.9 scoring differential edge. New York is 13-7 at home and Atlanta is 10-12 on the road. Despite a large difference in overall record in favor of the Knicks, the Hawks have won the first two games between the teams this season. That will change in this one. I like the Knicks by double digits in a game “over” the line.

Chicago Bulls versus Los Angeles Clippers

Here’s a game with teams heading in opposite directions. Chicago has lost three straight and “ice cold down” while Los Angeles has won three straight and “burning hot” on the Team Strength Oscillator. The Bulls are 10th in the Eastern Conference and the Clippers are 5th in the Western Conference. Chicago is above .500 on the road and the Clippers are 14-6 at home. Under the line has been the trend for these two teams and the Clippers have a +3 to -3 scoring differential edge. The Clippers won both games between the teams last season and the season before. I like that trend to continue in a game “under” the line.
