‘Nasty work’ – John Cena blamed for backstage Netflix issues that saw top WWE star ‘buried’ on Raw

John Cena is making new enemies in WWE’s fanbase with each passing day.

The wrestling veteran is renowned all over the world for being one of the most popular performers in the history of the industry.

Having been cast and excelled in the role of a babyface – the wrestling term of a good guy cheered by the crowd – he pulled off an about turn at Elimination Chamber earlier this month by becoming a heel – the bad guy.

Aligning with fellow grappler turned movie star Dwayne ‘The Rock’ Johnson – also now a heel – Cena stunned fans by attacking Cody Rhodes.

The drama continued when, on Raw on Monday night, he turned on his fans with a stinging blast in their direction.

In a rage on the microphone at the outset of the red-brand show on Netflix, he blasted: “For 25 years, I’ve been the victim… All you do is be hurtful, all you are is abusive.

“All you’ve ever done is bully me into being your damn puppet and expected me to do it with a smile on my face. No more.”

Even his most loyal fans came under attack, Cena even directing anger at a young child at ringside decked out in his merchandise, call him and the rest of the audience ‘a toxic, dysfunctional relationship.’

His delivery, hailed as one of the best of its kind in WWE, was followed by an exchange in the ring with Rhodes which, while explosive and compelling to watch, took up a huge portion of the show.

Changes to the episode had to be made accordingly, and it appears at least one match was impacted: another world title challenger in Jey Uso.

His outing against Austin Theory was reportedly cut from a planned time of 11 minutes to a mere just 29 seconds, according to WrestleVotes.

Uso won what became a squash match – a bout in which a wrestler loses in swift time without being able to build any offence – leaving Theory the proverbial fall guy for Cena’s tirade, which the report added ‘ran longer than expected.’

WWE, while able to use time more fluidly and with far greater freedom overall on Netflix as opposed to when shows are broadcast on television networks, are still thought to be subject to a weekly run time.

As such, plenty felt for Theory, especially as the match itself was notably rushed as a result. A rising star in his own right in WWE, he defeated Cena in their own tussle at WrestleMania 29.

Several called back to his ‘burial’ of the former United States Champion in the build-up to that clash, during which the veteran told his foe: “I’d rather be bald than have them pipe in fake crowd noises for my matches because nobody cares.”

One said on social media: “So it’s John Cena who started his burial with Austin Theory, revenge for WrestleMania loss.

Another said: “Cena really is untouchable…,” while fourth echoed: “Cena still trying to bury Theory after that feud… nasty work.”

Resenting Monday’s address which captivate many, one even hit out: “Cena spoke gibberish for 30 minutes!”

The dramatic turn in Cena’s character is all part of his retirement tour, the veteran having already stated his intention to stop wrestling after his current run with the company in 2025.

He’s already featured in the US, Canada and Europe and is expected to feature beyond WrestleMania and into the latter part of the year.

Cena’s epic wrestling career began at the turn of the millennium, the now 47-year-old going on to rack up a record-tying 16 world championship reigns since then.
