Man Utd vs Rangers predictions
Manchester United are the heavy odds-on betting favourites to beat Glasgow Rangers when the two teams clash on Matchday 7 in the Europa League. The Red Devils sit in 7th position in the Europa League table with 12 points from six matches. After they have played Rangers, United will face FCSB (Steaua Bucharest, in old money) in Romania on Matchday 8. Finishing inside the top eight is in their own hands. But this is Manchester United we are talking about.
United are in poor form. They have won just three of the eleven Premier League matches that Ruben Amorim has been in charge of. Whether Amorim’s remit is to rebuild the team, arrest a slide, or get into Europe, that is simply not good enough.
There have been some good performances under Amorim. But they have been sporadic, and United has been inconsistent at best. It is probably a bit harsh to say this is maybe the worst United team ever, as Amorim suggested it could be. After all, some of us can remember the United team Sir Alex Ferguson inherited in the 1980s. But it hasn’t been great in recent weeks, and as a result, Amorim is already in danger of being branded as the next Erik ten Hag.
United’s recent good performances against Liverpool in the Premier League and Arsenal in the FA Cup were nearly undone by Southampton at Old Trafford last Thursday.
A combination of Amad Diallo and some generous Southampton defending (if it can be called defending) got the Red Devils off the hook. It proved to be a stay of execution. United came unstuck against Brighton on Sunday.
Again, a lacklustre home performance, this time topped off by a clanger from André Onana in the United goal, as Brighton left Old Trafford with a 3-1 victory. Expect Amorim to ring the changes against Rangers.
Like Amorim, Rangers’ boss Philippe Clement is another man under pressure to get better results from an underperforming team. The Europa League has been a welcome distraction for the Gers. They sit 8th in the table with 11 points.
Overall, the European adventure hasn’t been a bad one. Rangers have won three, drawn two and lost just once.
The reason Philippe Clement is under pressure is two-fold: It is true that Celtic have been head and shoulders the best team in Scotland this season. But along with Celtic’s good form, Rangers have been poor. And the two combined, spells big trouble for Clement.
Rangers have failed to win nine of their 23 Scottish Premiership matches this season. The Gers do sit second in the table. But on 47 points, they are 13 behind Celtic.
Rangers have only managed to win 14 of their matches. Celtic has won 19. The gulf in class has been huge, and Clement has to take his share of the blame.
Recent form hasn’t been good. Rangers have won just three of their previous seven in the league, drawing three and losing one.
Ironically, one of the victories was against Celtic. Rangers’ 3-0 win over their cross-city rivals is the only time the league leaders have lost this season.
Had the Gers lost that January 2nd showdown at Ibrox, Clement may well already be out of a job.
There was some more welcome respite with a 5-0 Scottish Cup win over Fraserburgh F.C. of the Highland League on Sunday. That cup win followed a 3-0 win over Aberdeen in the league the previous Wednesday.
But unfortunately for Clement, his job success comes down to how his team measures up to Celtic. And at the moment, they are miles behind.
For now, the focus is back on the Europa League. After their United assignment, Rangers will face Union Saint-Gilloise at Ibrox on Matchday 8. They may well need to win that fixture to get into the top 8, depending on how the match at Old Trafford goes.
Manchester United vs Rangers betting tips
United and Rangers have both been too inconsistent this season. It’s hard to know what you will get from either team from one match to the next.
United seems to be doing better away from home. But Rangers have been shocking on the road in the Scottish Premiership. Our Man Utd vs Rangers betting tips are below:
Draw and both teams to score
Manchester United should win. But as the Red Devils have struggled in front of their home fans in recent weeks, odds of 2/5 on a United win are too short.
United could flounder again, opening the door for Rangers to leave Old Trafford with at least a point.
Free Bet Offers
But Rangers have been awful away from home domestically. The Gers have picked up only 13 points from a possible 33 on their travels in Scotland this season.
Despite this, Philippe Clement’s team are unbeaten on the road in the Europa League. So, along with United’s poor home form, a scoring draw looks the call.
Back the draw with both teams to score at 5/1 with Betfred
Bruno Fernandes to score or assist
Plenty think he’s one of the few players worth sticking with at United. Selected others think he is part of the problem.
Whatever your view, Fernandes has assisted two goals in United’s last three Europa League cup fixtures.
Furthermore, the United captain has provided goal contributions in three of United’s last four matches.
He started with an assist against Liverpool in the league. That was followed by a stunning goal against Arsenal in the FA Cup.
There was no goal contribution against Southampton, but Fernandes got United’s only goal against Brighton from the penalty spot.
Back Bruno to continue his run against Rangers.
Back Bruno Fernandes to score or assist at 8/11 with Paddy Power
Hamza Igamane to have over 1.5 shots
Hamza Igamane is the joint-top scorer at Rangers with nine goals.
Two of his goals have come in his last two Scottish Premiership matches and he also has five goals and one assist in his last four domestic outings.
But playing against United at Old Trafford is different. And even in their current poor form, United is a step up in class to the teams Igamane has faced in recent weeks.
But even if he can’t get on the scoresheet against United (he is an appealing looking 23/5), he is likely to have a few shots at goal in his current form.
Igamane had six shots against St. Johnstone, scoring one. And five against Aberdeen, again, scoring one.
The Moroccan is going to fancy his chances to get on the scoresheet at Old Trafford. And against an underperforming United, he should manage at least two shots.
Hamza Igamane to have 2 or more shots at 3/4 with BetMGM
