Kalshi Makes It Now Possible to Legally Bet on the Super Bowl in Any State

Super Bow 59 will follow a storyline familiar to many in recent years — an elite NFC team will try to exact revenge on Patrick Mahomes and the Chiefs. And while that familiarity may not make for the most exciting run up to the game for some, this year’s Super Bowl does have a new twist. How? Because Super Bowl betting is now technically legal in all 50 states through Kalshi.

While legal sports betting has boomed over the last handful of years, many states continue to be left out of the party. PA sports betting and several other state marketplaces have long had access to game odds, all while states like Texas, Florida, California, Georgia and other states, to date, have lacked a direct path to place legal bets. Enter Kalshi, which, ironically is not a sports betting app. Rather, it’s an emerging prediction market app that allows the trading of positions against an event.

The brand first gained traction during the 2024 election cycle. As it has now entered the sports space, the app, which  is offering a number of markets related to the impending Eagles-Chiefs Super Bowl matchup to those who are 18+ years of age.

Kalshi Offers Super Bowl Betting in All 50 States

The most basic question regarding Kalshi and sports betting is centered around one word. How?

While sportsbook brands are subject to individual state approvals around sports betting, prediction markets (and prediction market contracts) fall under purview of the Commodities Futures Trading Commission. That means the purchase and trading of such contracts — including bets placed on Eagles-Chiefs — are not limited to certain states that have previously given the go-ahead on sports betting.

That said, the most direct way to take a position on Eagles-Chiefs is by buying contracts on which team will win the game. Right now, a “yes” contract on Kansas City to win is set at 53%. A “yes” contract on the Eagles, in turn, is set at 47%. From a potential profit standpoint, if you purchase $100 worth of contracts it will pay $82. A “yes” on Philadelphia to win will pay out $105. In terms of how that compares with a traditional sportsbook operator, the Eagles have bounced around +105 to +110 in the first days since the matchup was set. In the case of a +105 moneyline a $100 wager pays out $105 in profit, so the gain at Kalshi runs similarly.

One other thing — these contracts can be traded up to and throughout Super Bowl 59.

For now, there is no ability to bet point totals, spreads and the like. However, the ability to bet the Super Bowl winner in a safe, regulated and legal manner will be plenty appealing those in states where you can’t already do so.

Why Kalshi Could Be a Go-To for Super Bowl Bets

What about the states where legal sports betting is already rolling along? Kalshi could be a factor in those states for one very simple reason — it currently offers a variety of novelty markets:

• Which companies will run Super Bowl ads?
• Who will be a part of Kendrick’s Super Bowl halftime show?
• What songs will be played at the Super Bowl?

So, if you think Verizon will run a spot or Lil’ Wayne might make an appearance during half time, you can make bets on such outcomes. In fact, while the Super Bowl might make for the most immediate draw, it should be noted (probably much higher than it is in this piece) that Kalshi offers contracts on everything from fed meetings on interest rates to the Grammys to future Rotten Tomatoes scores of upcoming movies.

Betting on the Super Bowl in Texas, California, and Florida

The only state that will definitively launch legal online sports betting in 2025 in Missouri. That means Texas, California, Florida and Georgia are among the states that will have to wait at least another calendar year to access the brands they’ve been watching sponsor in-game broadcast segments, sports talk radio programs, television shows for years now. They will not, however, have to wait another year to place legal betting contracts on the Super Bowl.
