‘I wouldn’t care’ – Alan Shearer gets brutally honest on how much he wants Newcastle to end 70-year trophy drought

Alan Shearer made a Newcastle trophy revelation before their Carabao Cup semi-final win over Arsenal.

Eddie Howe’s side eased into the final on Wednesday night with a 4-0 aggregate win over the Gunners.

Goals from Jacob Murphy and Anthony Gordon sealed a 2-0 second leg victory at St. James’ Park.

Newcastle will now face either Liverpool or Tottenham in the final at Wembley Stadium on March 16.

A win for the Magpies would end their 70-year wait for a major trophy, dating back to the 1955 FA Cup.

Shearer addressed the trophy doubt on The Rest Is Football podcast ahead of the second leg.

Asked by Gary Lineker if he would be going to the match, the Toon icon said: “I’m going on Wednesday night, can’t wait.

“I would actually, I wouldn’t care if Newcastle didn’t win another game this season but if they win two – Wednesday night and the final, I’d be a happy man.”

Lineker agreed the club’s wait for a trophy has been ‘crazy’, before Shearer added: “70 years man, (without) a domestic trophy. 70 years. 1955.

“As you know I don’t like swearing but f****** hell come on.”

Although they won the Inter-Cities Fairs Cup in 1969, Newcastle’s wait for a major domestic title dates back seven decades.

The Magpies have been beaten finalists five times since their FA Cup final win over Manchester City in 1955.

Newcastle’s major trophy history

Trophy Wins Year
First Division 4 1905, 1907, 1909, 1927
FA Cup 6 1910, 1924, 1932, 1951, 1952, 1955

During that time, the club have also twice finished second in the Premier League in back-to-back seasons between 1995 and 1997.

Next month’s final will be their second appearance in the Carabao Cup showpiece under Howe.

He also guided his side to the final in 2023, losing out 2-0 to Manchester United at Wembley.

Speaking afterwards, the Newcastle boss said: “It’s a long time. We’d love to end it and we’ll work as hard as we can and prepare right to try to do that.”

He added: “Fate will naturally take its course, I don’t think we’ll engage on the emotion of who we’ll play. That will come in time, of course.

“Two elite teams, two very good sides that we have faced this season, so we know whoever we play will be a tough opponent.

“But I think it’s just a case at the moment of being really pleased to have won today, continued our good momentum and good form and yes, we’ve shown that we can compete against any team in the Premier League.

“At our very best levels, I think we’re a very good team, so I think that should give us loads of confidence.”

The winner of Thursday’s second leg between Liverpool and Spurs awaits the Toon Army this season.

Spurs head into tonight’s match with a narrow 1-0 advantage from their first meeting in January.
