How to Fill in Your Bracket

There is more than one way to skin a cat. I’m not sure where that gruesome phrase originated, but the same mantra applies to how to fill out a March Madness bracket.

You’re likely going to hem-and-haw over a few of the matchups along the way, so having the ability to erase is crucial. It’s also worth noting the games become more valuable as the tournament progresses.

One unconventional path to take is to pick your national champion before filling out the rest of your bracket. Working backwards is a different-yet-intuitive way to help you chart your course. Keeping track of seeding is also important. Obviously, teams with higher seeds (meaning #1 is the highest seed, #16 is the lowest) tend to be more talented and better suited to make deep runs into the tournament.

How To Score Your March Madness Brackets?

If you’re running a March Madness bracket or an office pool with our templates, you need to figure out the scoring before you begin. There are many different approaches to this one, but let me highlight a few popular ones to help.

• Traditional scoring: the classic scoring usually brings you 1 point for each correct prediction in the first round, 2 points for the second, 4 points for the Sweet 16, 8 points for the Elite 8, 16 points for the Final Four, 32 points if you get the champ right.
• Swifter scale: if you feel the traditional scoring is way too steep, you can simply increase the points per correct prediction with 1 per round, so 1 point for the first round, 2 points for the second, 3 points for the Sweet 16, and so on.
• Upset bounties: if you want to make your bracket more unpredictable, you can add a bount for each upset that is equal to the difference between the two seeds of the teams. For example, if a 16th seed beats a 1st seed, that would be 16-1=15 extra points! It’s a cool way to add chaos to your scoring and incentivise people to go wild with their predictions.
