Hurricanes win -1.5 (+136)
The Hurricanes are happy to be home for the first two games of their postseason. At the friendly confines, the Hurricanes were an impressive 31-9-1. That home record was good for 3rd best in the NHL this season. The home-ice advantage comes at a good time, too. The Hurricanes ended the season on a bit of a slide as they had just 1 win in their last 8 games. There is an aspect, though, of Carolina not having to have played a meaningful game in quite some time. Being far behind Washington and far ahead of New Jersey, their playoff seed has been determined for weeks.
It was not a great end to the season for the Devils either. New Jersey had 1 win in their last 5 games which was an overtime win over a weak Boston team. Head to head, Carolina has won 7 out of the last 9 played against New Jersey. While they split the season series 2-2, all 4 games were played before the Devils lost Jack Hughes, Dougie Hamilton, and Jonas Siegenthaler. Hughes would arguably be the best player in this series, Siegenthaler is a reliable defenseman who is not likely to suit up, and Hamilton should suit up, but there are questions as to how healthy he is. The Hurricanes are the healthier team that was better in the regular season and has home ice advantage. They were 24-17 against the spread at home this year, and are worth the play in this one.
Over 5.5 (+114)
The over has been rolling for both the Devils and Hurricanes lately. Albeit, not for reasons either team would prefer. Nonetheless, the over has hit in 7 out of Carolina’s last 10 games, as well as in New Jersey’s last 2 games which averaged a game total of 8 goals. In their respective last 10 games, the over is 12-6-2 in those combined 20 games. Also during that span, Devils road games and Hurricanes home games combined for a 6-2 over under record.
As mentioned, both teams played some uninspiring hockey to end the season. That should change in a big way in this game as the intensity and urgency will be a night and day difference from those meaningless games. The lackluster goal prevention was the reason for overs for both teams. While it should be at least a little bit buttoned up, there is still plenty of offensive upside in this game to go over 5.5 total goals. All 4 head to head matchups this season went over 5.5 goals. While there are key players missing, these teams are very familiar with each other. Carolina has scored 4+ goals in 3 out of their last 5 games and if they can hold to similar form, they will force New Jersey to take some offensive chances. The over 5.5 has a good look today.
Sebastian Aho anytime goalscorer (+185)
In the 2 wins the Hurricanes collected over the Devils this season, Sebastian Aho tallied 2 goals and an assist. That is not surprising considering the Hurricanes ranked 9th in the NHL in goals scored per game and Aho led the team in points. This is a young 27 year old player who already has 9 seasons under his belt. In those 9 seasons, Aho has not had a season with fewer than 24 goals scored, and has scored 30+ goals in 5 of those seasons.
Historically, Aho has carried strong play into the postseason. In 74 career playoff games played, Aho has tallied 27 goals and 70 points. Last year was the first postseason in which he averaged over a point per game as he logged 12 points in 11 games. The Hurricanes will need that production if they are going to make a run. Carolina has developed a bit of a reputation for not coming through in the playoffs despite some phenomenal teams. This will be the 7th consecutive Hurricanes playoff team Aho will have been a key part of. He would love nothing more than to shake this underachiever tag the Hurricanes have. Look for Aho to come out with some jam and make a push to get on the board.
