The Bucs keep bringing in defensive backs for official visits and the latest is Marshall’s J.J. Roberts. The Sports Dude Heinz Show reported the news about the Roberts visit on X back on April 2.
Marshall DB JJ Roberts will be visiting with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.
In his 2024 campaign he had 94tkl, 5tfl, 1 sack, 1FF, and 14PD which ranked 2nd most in the FBS this season. pic.twitter.com/widyJV3A9C— The Sportsdudeheinz Show (@SdudeHeinzShow) April 2, 2025
The 5-foot-11, 192-pound safety began his career at Wake Forest where he played for three seasons before transferring to Marshall. He racked up 213 tackles, six tackles for loss, 25 pass breakups, five forced fumbles, three interceptions and one sack.
Roberts is coming off his best season in 2024, finishing with 94 tackles, five tackles for loss, a sack, a forced fumble, and 14 pass breakups, which was the most in the Sun Belt Conference.
Roberts, who had a career-high two interceptions in 2023, which was his first season with the Thundering Herd, is viewed as a Day 3 prospect or an undrafted free agent.
Tampa Bay now has 15 known visitors out of 30 so far, including six defensive backs – five of which are conrebracks.
Bucs Need Safety Help In 2025

With the release of Jordan Whitehead, who was the starter in 2024 after returning to the team that drafted him following two seasons with the New York Jets, the Bucs have a need at safety. There has been some discussion about moving nickelback Tykee Smith to strong safety where he played some at Georgia to replace Whitehead. Even if that’s the case, the team is down a safety and will need to add another one to the roster.
Tampa Bay did re-sign exclusive rights free agent Kaevon Merriweather, who made some strides last year with some playing time on defense in addition to special teams. Right now, Merriweather would be the No. 4 safety on the team behind Christian Izien. The Bucs also have a pair of safeties that were on the practice squad in Rachad Wisdom and Marcus Banks.
Marshall’s J.J. Roberts, who turns 24 in September, ran a 4.41 at his pro day and could interest the Bucs, who are looking for safety depth and special teams help. Roberts blocked a field goal last year for the Thundering Herd.
