Xabi Alonso’s Leverkusen will host Union Berlin at the BayArena on Matchday 29 of the Bundesliga. The defending champions are six points behind leaders Bayern Munich with just six matches left to play.
Leverkusen are on a winning streak of three in the Bundesliga, but did suffer a recent setback by losing 2-1 to third-tier Arminia Bielefeld in the semi-final of the DFB-Pokal.

Bayer Leverkusen vs Union Berlin predictions
Bayer Leverkusen sit second in the Bundesliga table with 62 points from 28 matches. They have won 18, drawn eight and lost two.
Xabi Alonso’s team are the defending champions. But they have struggled to keep up with leaders Bayern Munich, who have 68 points.
Leverkusen haven’t given up hope of retaining the title. They are on a three-match winning streak in the Bundesliga and have won five of their last six.
Their most recent result was a 1-0 victory over relegation-threatened Heidenheim on Saturday. A 91st-minute goal from substitute Emi Buendía saw the champions claim maximum points, just when it looked like two were about to slip away.
Leverkusen can take heart from that win, it showed they are still fighting for the title.
Offering them another glimmer of hope is Bayern have to play Dortmund in Der Klassiker later in the day.
Furthermore, this fixture is bang in the middle of Bayern’s two legged Champions League quarter-final against Inter. And with Bayern 2-1 down from the home leg, there is every possibility head coach Vincent Kompany may select a team against Dortmund with the second leg in mind.
Leverkusen can’t worry too much about what Bayern are doing, their focus has to be on the in-form Union Berlin.
Despite being in the bottom half of the table since the end of November, a run of three wins and one draw has seen Steffen Baumgart’s team pull clear of the relegation dogfight.
The wins have been impressive as well. The run started with a 2-1 win on the road at Frankfurt. That was followed by an impressive 1-1 draw at home to Bayern.
Another 2-1 win away from home followed against Freiburg, with Baumgart’s team winning 1-0 at home to Wolfsburg in their most recent fixture.
The results are a far cry from Union’s 6-0 thrashing away at Dortmund on Matchday 23. That seems to be the result that served as the kick up the backside Die Eisernen needed.
Union now sit 13th in the table with 33 points. They have won nine, drawn six and lost 13.
Perhaps more crucially, Union are now 11 points clear of the relegation zone and looking safe for another season of top flight football.
Bayer Leverkusen vs Union Berlin betting tips
Both teams have been in impressive form in recent weeks in the Bundesliga. Leverkusen needs to win, but with Union now playing without the fear of relegation hanging over them, it looks set to be a tricky afternoon for Xabi Alonso’s team. Our match betting tips follow:
Leverkusen to win and BTTS
Union Berlin has scored in all of their last four Bundesliga matches. Furthermore, all four of their opponents are above them in the league, with two of them in the top three.

Despite Leverkusen tightening up at the back in recent weeks, we are backing Die Eisernen to find the net against Alonso’s team.
A bet on Leverkusen to win is just 2/7. Throw in both teams to score and it pays 2/1.
Tip – Back Leverkusen to win and yes in both teams to score at 2/1 with Parimatch
Patrik Schick to score anytime
Patrik Schick is having a great season in front of goal for Leverkusen. The Czech international has 17 goals in his 25 Bundesliga matches, only Harry Kane has scored more.
After a run of three goals in four matches, Schick hasn’t scored in his last two appearances.
Leverkusen defeated Bochum 3-1 in the first of the two matches. While in the second (the 1-0 win over Heidenheim last Saturday), Schick started from the bench, and again his team struggled to score without him.
This has happened before. Most notably in Leverkusen’s back-to-back 0-0 draws with Wolfsburg and Munich in February.
With his team desperately needing to start scoring again, Alonso turned to his top scorer, and Schick rewarded him with three goals in his next four matches.
Alonso can’t keep leaving it to the last minute to win matches. So we expect to see Schick back in the starting XI on Saturday. If he is, back him to score anytime at 6/5.
Tip – Back Patrik Schick to score anytime at 6/5 with Grosvenor
Over 2.5 goals
Leverkusen needs to win and we can also see the in-form Union Berlin scoring against the defending champions.
This means goals at both ends, with a likely scoreline of 2-1 or 3-1 to the hosts.
If you think it is more likely to be 3-1, then back over 3.5 goals at 7/5. We can see Union being tough to beat, so we are going for over 2.5 instead.
Tip – Back over 2.5 goals at 11/20 with NetBet
