Australian Open Tennis 2025 Predictions: Women’s Singles Winner Preview & Best Bets – Coco Gauff coming in hot

Coco Gauff

We are just barely a week into the 2025 calendar year, but the first Grand Slam of the 2025 tennis season is already here. The Australian Open is set to take place January 12-26 at Melbourne Park.

Aryna Sabalenka is the 2-time defending champion and the #1 player in the world, so she heads into the upcoming fortnight as an obvious favorite. However, 5-time major champion Iga Swiatek and a red-hot Coco Gauff cannot be discounted. Former runner-up Elena Rybakina, 2024 gold medalist Qinwen Zheng and 2-time Aussie winner Naomi Osaka are also among the contenders.

Let’s take a look at the odds and best bets to make for the women’s singles competition in Melbourne.

Australian Open tennis 3-star best bet: Coco Gauff (+450)

Nobody on the women’s tour has looked better than Gauff through the first 2 weeks of the new season. The 2023 U.S. Open champion kicked off 2025 by leading the United States to victory at the United Cup team competition. Gauff went 5-0 in singles without losing a set in the entire tournament, picking up wins over Swiatek and former French Open runner-up Karolina Muchova in the process. The world #3 is now on a 9-match winning streak dating back to her triumph at the 2024 WTA year-end championship. A semifinal run at last year’s Australian Open will only give Gauff even more confidence.

Australian Open tennis 2-star best bet: Elena Rybakina (+1000)

The one drawback when it comes to Rybakina is her bizarre coaching situation. Longtime coach Stefano Vukov has been serving a suspension handed to him by the WTA Tour for a code of conduct violation. That prompted Rybakina to hire former Wimbledon champion Goran Ivanisevic, who previously worked with Novak Djokovic. Earlier this week, though, Rybakina announced that Vukov is coming back – leaving Ivanisevic’s status in limbo. Whatever the case, the Kazakh seems like a cool customer who doesn’t let controversy negatively impact her game. She is a former Grand Slam champion (Wimbledon 2022) and reached the Australian Open final in 2023 before falling to Sabalenka. Rybakina played well at the United Cup last week, compiling a 3-1 record with a loss only to Swiatek.

Australian Open tennis 1-star best bet: Emma Navarro (+5000)

It’s always a good idea to dig deep for some longshot plays at majors, especially at the Australian Open – which is often the most unpredictable at the 4 since it is played at the start of the season and players can be rusty. It’s an even better idea to make Navarro your longshot selection for the 2025 Aussie Open. The 23-year-old American is coming off a stellar season in which she propelled herself from #38 in the rankings to #8. Navarro certainly isn’t afraid of the big stage, either. Her 2 best Grand Slam results have come at the last 2 – Wimbledon (quarterfinals) and the U.S. Open (semis). The former University of Virginia standout finds herself in Swiatek’s quarter of the draw, but at least she wouldn’t have to face Rybakina until the semifinals and either Sabalenka or Gauff until the final.
