Expert Australian Open Predictions with Reasoning
Here’s why our experts back the Australian Open betting picks above for January 15.
Taylor Fritz vs Christian Garin: Fritz -8 Games (-110)
It was smooth sailing for the world No. 4 Taylor Fritz who coasted past countryman Jenson Brooksby 6–2, 6–0, 6–3 in the first round. In winning 18/25 games Fritz would’ve soared over a game spread of -8. That’s the total game spread for his matchup with the 150th-ranked Christian Garin of Chile.
Garin came through the qualifiers and defeated Borna Coric 7–5, 6–1, 6–2 in the first round. Playing Fritz will be a big step up in class as looking at his recent resume, he’s been involved in many Challenger Tour tournaments and this is the first time he’s advanced to the next stage of a Grand Slam since the US Open in 2022.
The two have played three times, with Garin winning in 2022, but Fritz won the two most recent meetings in 2023 and 2024. Last year in Germany, the American won 6–3, 6–4. All three of those meetings came on clay, a surface better suited to Garin.
The Chilean was only 3-6 on hard-courts last season, while posting a losing record on the surface in five of the past six seasons. Fritz, in contrast has an overall career hard-court record of 241-122.
Fritz dominated his round one match with seven aces, winning 83% of his first serves, collecting 95 points and at one point winning 11 games in a row.
It was a banner year for Fritz in 2024, being a finalist in the US Open, ATP Finals and finishing the year fourth overall. The year is less than a month old, and he’s already lifted one trophy as a member of the winning USA side at the United Cup and is a sleeper pick in the Australian Open odds.
If you want to be a bit safer and not worry about how many games Fritz wins by, another Australian Open prop offered in this match is Garin to not a win set, coming in at -165 odds, which also looks like a good bet. For better betting value, we’ll back Fritz on the game line at -8 and -110.
Joao Fonseca vs Lorenzo Sonego: Fonseca -1.5 Sets (-155)
Here we have another player who delivers his best matches on clay, and that’s Lorenzo Sonego. In his career, Sonego is 197-128 on clay, compared to 77-80 on hard-courts.
In the one previous meeting between these players it was the youngster Joao Fonseca winning last year in Bucharest on clay 7–6(7-5), 7–5.
The 18-year-old Fonseca played much of 2024 in the Challenger Tour but is an up-and-coming talent as the winner of the Next Gen ATP Finals last season. He may be only 112th in the rankings compared to Sonego at 55th, but Fonseca comes in heavily favored to advance at -550 odds.
This, after he pulled a massive upset in the first round, taking down world No. 9 Andrey Rublev in straight sets. The first and third sets went to tiebreak, but Fonseca made history becoming only the second teenager in their first Grand Slam main draw to upset a top-10 ranked player.
Fonseca is rolling having yet to drop a set and dominating in games won 36-12 in qualifying as well.
Sonego beat Stan Wawrinka in four sets, 6–4, 5–7, 7–5, 7–5 in the first round. His other action in 2025 saw reach the Round of 16 at the ASB Classic before losing in two sets.
The arrow is pointing up, way up on Fonseca, and he should advance and at least by two sets for today’s Australian Open best bets.
Emma Raducanu vs Amanda Anisimova: Over 21 Games (-135)
It’s the first-ever meeting between the 61st-ranked Raducanu and 35th-ranked Anisimova.
Raducanu has only ever won one title. It was a big one at the US Open, but that was back in 2021. Only once since then, has she even made the Round of 16 in a Grand Slam event. In the Australian Open, she’s never advanced past the Round of 64.
In the first round, Raducanu grinded out a two-set win with both going to a tiebreak, 7–6(7-4), 7–6(7-2) against Ekaterina Alexandrova. She advanced, despite a sloppy performance where she had 15 double faults and losing serve six times.
Anisimova only has two career titles to her name and none in a Slam. Her furthest run in a major was the semifinals way back in 2019 at Roland Garros. She’s never had a ton of success in Australia, but reached the Round of 16 last year, as well as in 2022.
Anisimova prevailed 6–2, 6–3 in the first round over Maria Lourdes Carle, despite winning only 49% of her first serves. She was able to break her opponent on five of nine tries.
Both players are good on hard-courts, with Raducanu being 79-34 and Anisimova 101-62. The main game total is set at 21.5. We’ll take the Over on the alternative game line of 21 in our Australian Open best bets as we expect a close match between these two. This game total can be hit with two close sets and will certainly win certainly if the match goes over 2.5 sets (+135) as another betting option.
