Andrew’s best Saturday horse racing betting tips for Curragh and Doncaster

As the jump season reaches its final furlong, the flat is gearing up for what promises to be a season of high drama.

Today, Doncaster launches their flat season with the Lincoln handicap, while across the water, the Curragh host their second meeting of the season, and that is where I will concentrate on today’s horse racing betting tips.

Andrew’s best bets for Saturday

  1. Curragh 3:25 – Mathan
  2. Doncaster 3:25 – Midnight Gun (e/w)
  3. Curragh 4:00 – Post Master
  4. Curragh 5:45 – Duke Of Leggagh

Curragh 3:25 Follow @ToteRacing On X Maiden – 7f (5yo+)

If you said that the 2023 Champion Bumper winner A Dream To Share was going to end up in a 7f maiden at the Curragh just two years after a season that saw him touted as one of the most promising national hunt horses in training, then you would have gotten a lot of people questioning you choices in this game. But low and behold, here he is.

He comes here after finishing 4th in a 1m maiden at this track, which, if they really wanted to, could have won. The drop-down to 7f here is going to do him no favours, but he will be interesting going forward when they step him up in trip for handicaps.

The one they all have to beat today is MATHAN. He has finished runner-up in two of his three starts, but in all honesty, he should have won last time out when given too much to do 1f out. This race is no stronger than what he faced that day, and he should make the most of his experience and race fitness to get the job done today.

Doncaster 3:35 William Hill Lincoln – 1m (Str) (4yo+)

As always, this is one of the most difficult handicaps to solve at the start of the flat season, but the one I like that should be able to unlock a lot more potential on the back of a gelding operation is MIDNIGHT GUN.

Even though he has won two races already, he doesn’t seem to want to put all in when the going gets tough. The upside is that he could be well handicapped off 101, and now that he is gelded, he wouldn’t be the first horse to show massive improvement for the operation, and on his breeding, Midnight Gun should be capable of a lot better than he has shown.

Curragh 4:00 Listed Lester Piggott Gladness Stakes – 7f (3yo+)

The course specialist, Big Gossy, is sure to do well here once again, and given his race fitness, he shouldn’t be far away at the finish. Camille Pissarro is another one with a big chance, but Aidan’s are usually left with plenty of improvement to come from the first run to the second. This leaves this open for the UK raider POET MASTER to make it two from two over course and distance.

He won with ease over course and distance in July and backed that up with a 5th in Group 2 company and a 5th in Group 1 company at the end of the season.

Poet Master has won three times after a break, and Karl Burke would not be sending him here if he wasn’t ready to do himself justice. He should take all the beating here.

Curragh 5:45 Tote.ie Handicap – 1m4f (4yo+)

It’s a wide-open handicap to close out the day at the Curragh, but it may be worth siding with the rapidly improving hurdler DUKE OF LEGGAGH.

He has shot up in the handicap over hurdles from a rating of 106 to 122 after two back-to-back handicap hurdle wins, leaving him looking well-treated back on the level.

If he can translate his improved form over hurdles back to the flat, then he should be bang there off 70, which is just 1 lb higher than his last win on the flat.

Duke Of Leggagh also has the added bonus of having Wesley Joyce take off a valuable 5 lbs. I’m expecting a massive run here.
