Quarterfinal action at the U.S. Open gets underway on Tuesday. Three Americans are taking the court: Taylor Fritz, Frances Tiafoe and Emma Navarro. All 3 are underdogs.
Let’s take a look at the best bets to be made on the Day 9 schedule.
Emma Navarro ML over Paula Badosa (+110)
I can’t pass up Navarro as an underdog — albeit a small one — in this matchup. And neither should you. The American has been red hot basically all year long and also advanced to the Wimbledon quarterfinals earlier this summer. She lost to eventual runner-up Jasmine Paolini, but at least she has experience in this situation. Navarro really has momentum after taking out U.S. Open defending champion Coco Gauff on Sunday. Navarro wasn’t the crowd favorite against Gauff, of course, but she will be in a big way in this one. As for Badosa, she had previously been to just 1 major quarterfinal (2021 Roland Garros) prior to this result. The Spaniard’s comeback from a 2023 injury has been going well, but it’s been a while since she has been on this stage. Give me Navarro.
Frances Tiafoe +2.5 games over Grigor Dimitrov (-112)
Tiafoe was incorrectly the underdog against Alexei Popyrin in round 3 on Sunday night. There is more reason to make him the underdog against a current top-10 player and experienced veteran in Dimitrov, but it still isn’t enough. Dimitrov is coming off a 5-setter against Andrey Rublev in which he endured multiple dips in energy. It’s hard to trust the 33-year-old from a physical standpoint if he has to play another 5 sets, and it’s unlikely that he will be able to wipe Tiafoe off the court in swift fashion. Moreover, Tiafoe has been the better player over the course of the hard-court summer. He finished runner-up to Jannik Sinner in Montreal to go along with a semifinal showing in Washington, D.C. Now he is making yet another run in New York. In 2022 he advanced to the semis and last summer he reached the quarters. Don’t be surprised if the 26-year-old picks up another win, but getting 2.5 game could come in handy in what will probably be a very competitive match.
Taylor Fritz +2.5 games over Alexander Zverev (-112)
The head-to-head series stands at a close 4-3 in Zverev’s favor, while Fritz leads 3-2 on hard courts. They squared off recently in the Wimbledon fourth round and Fritz won in 5 sets. Although Zverev was hampered late in that match by a knee problem, Fritz had already taken control in the fifth when the injury started to become a real factor. Fritz now has home-court advantage in the United States, where he also advanced to the quarterfinals last summer. Both guys have been pretty dominant so far this fortnight and Fritz was especially impressive in convincing victories over former U.S. Open semifinalist Matteo Berrettini and world #8 Casper Ruud. The world #12 has a good chance to beat Zverev yet again.
