U.S. Open Tennis Day 8 Predictions: Today’s Expert Picks & Best Bets – Daniil Medvedev tries to march into quarterfinals

Daniil Medvedev

The U.S. Open quarterfinal lineup will be set following the conclusion of play of Labor Day. It’s a blockbuster holiday lineup, headlined by the men’s and women’s world #1s in Jannik Sinner and Iga Swiatek. Daniil Medvedev and Jasmine Paolini are also in action.

Let’s take a look at the best bets to be made on the Day 8 schedule.

Parlay: Iga Swiatek -1.5 sets over Liudmila Samsonova and Daniil Medvedev -1.5 sets over Nuno Borges (-114)

Both Swiatek and Medvedev should be in for routine days at the office. Swiatek won the U.S. Open and is also a 4-time French Open champion. Samsonova, on the other hand, has never advanced past round 4 of a major. Swiatek is sweeping the head-to-head series 3-0 and their 2 most recent results have been 6-1, 6-0 and 6-2, 6-2. Meanwhile, Medvedev is 2-0 all time against Borges and 5-1 in total sets, with both wins coming in 2024. Borges, the world #34 from Portugal, is coming off a difficult 5-setter against Jakub Mensik on Saturday whereas Medvedev is well rested after totally cruising through 3 rounds. As if all of that isn’t enough, this has to be considered the world #5’s favorite tournament. He lifted the trophy in 2021 and is also a 2-time runner-up.

Jasmine Paolini +2.5 games over Karolina Muchova (-122)

There is no reason why Paolini can’t win this entire tournament. Getting past Swiatek and Aryna Sabalenka would be a problem, but Muchova – despite boasting a lot of talent – is a manageable opponent. The Czech has played a mere 14 total matches this season because of injury problems and her results have been solid but unspectacular. As for Paolini, has been one of the WTA Tour’s best players throughout the entire 2024 campaign. She reached each of the 2 most recent major finals at the French Open and Wimbledon, so it’s obvious that she is a force on every single surface. The Italian is up to a well-deserved ranking of #5. Getting 2.5 games with Paolini as the underdog is a steal of a deal.

Tommy Paul +6.5 games over Jannik Sinner (-102)

Sinner is effectively giving more than 2 games per set. In 3 previous head-to-head encounters, not once has he covered such a spread. Their most lopsided result has been a somewhat competitive 6-4, 6-4 scoreline in the Italian’s favor, while Paul won their second meeting 6-3, 3-6, 6-3 a couple of years ago on the grass courts of Eastbourne. Although Sinner is a sizable title favorite now that Novak Djokovic and Carlos Alcaraz have been ousted from New York, the top seed has been dealing with a hip injury dating back to Wimbledon. It has not hindered him too much during this U.S. hard-court swing, but it’s still a minor cause for concern – especially at a slam, in which guys are playing best-of-5 matches every other day. Paul has been in amazing form all year long and loves the big stage, specifically at the U.S. Open in front of an American crowd. Count on Paul keeping this one close…if not even winning it.
