McIlroy was 13 shots back heading into round two and battling to survive the weekend.

Other big names hoping to get their tournament back on track after struggling in Thursday’s windier conditions included two-time major winner John Rahm (two over), world number seven Viktor Hovland (four over), England’s Tommy Fleetwood and US Open champion Bryson DeChambeau (both five over) and 15-time major winner Tiger Woods (eight over).

The Open 2024: All about Royal Troon

The Open Championship has been held at Troon on nine occasions with Sweden’s Henrik Stenson winning a thriller last time out in 2016.

Designed by George Strath and Willie Fernie in 1888 and renovated by James Braid in 1923, Troon’s Old Course follows a traditional out-and-back manner like the Old Course at St Andrews.

It will play to a par-71 and a maximum of 7,190 yards this year.

Troon boosts one of the most famous holes in world golf – the par-3 eighth ‘Postage Stamp’.

The iconic hole, famed for its tiny green, could play as short as 99 yards.

At the other end of the scale, this tournament will include the longest hole in Open history with the par-5 sixth hole ‘Turnberry’ set to measure 623 yards.

Troon includes a classic major finishing run with a gettable par-5 followed by a tough par-3 and a wonderful par-4 to finish.
