Every fantasy manager knows the path to truly assembling a championship-worthy roster requires finding value for their fantasy roster late in drafts! While the term “sleeper” gets used a lot during draft season, it really has transformed over the years as the average fantasy player has become more informed heading into the season, so a true sleeper is harder to come by. At the very least, a sleeper in modern drafts is usually drafted in the later rounds and has a chance to excel but faces hurdles to get there including opportunity, scheme, or team circumstance.
Andy, Mike, and Jason each gave us a glimpse into their sleeper picks heading into the 2024 season on the August 20 episode, which you listen to anywhere you get your podcasts!
WR – Keon Coleman (BUF)
Andy: WR48 | Jason: WR58 | Mike: WR51
ADP: 8.12 | WR43
Andy kicks things off with one of the more intriguing rookie WRs from the 2024 draft class, Keon Coleman. Coleman was a polarizing prospect prior to being drafted by the Bills with the 33rd overall pick, but it’s important to remember that Buffalo picked him over Ladd McConkey, Adonai Mitchell, and Ja’Lynn Polk as their WR of choice. While the offseason has been a little more quiet than fantasy managers would prefer for a rookie WR, Coleman finds himself on the brink of the regular season in a WR room that vacated 241 targets from last season and now has a banged up Curtis Samuel and Marquez Valdes-Scantling.
Through two preseason games, Coleman looks like he’ll be the X receiver on the outside for the Bills after playing 100% of his snaps with the starters so far. The challenge for fantasy managers to get some payoff from Coleman is being patient enough to see the boom weeks we’re wanting from him. Ultimately, there’s a ton of opportunity for Coleman to eat up targets in this Bills offense, and he could prove extremely valuable once he’s fully worked into it.
RB – J.K. Dobbins (LAC)
Andy: RB57 | Jason: RB46 | Mike: RB39
ADP: 12.01 | RB44
The potential to have the main RB for a Jim Harbaugh offense has Jason wanting to bet on J.K. Dobbins this season. Dobbins has been a part of the “West Coast Ravens” movement that we’ve seen over the offseason after Harbaugh was hired as the Chargers’ new head coach. The Chargers let RB Austin Ekeler walk in free agency and only brought in Dobbins and Gus Edwards as the veteran RBs on the team. With Greg Roman running the offense for the Chargers, fantasy managers should have a pretty good idea of what Dobbins is capable of once he’s on the field. Dobbins averaged 5.9 yards per carry while the pair were in Baltimore together and that includes the 2022 season when Dobbins was recovering from ACL complications.
There is some risk that fantasy managers are taking when drafting Dobbins due to him returning from an Achilles injury early in the 2023 season, but that risk may already be baked into his draft position in the 12th round. If Dobbins is the lead back on an offense that will run the ball often, has the 12th-ranked offensive line according to PFF, and has the second easiest strength of schedule, then he’ll be a big hit. On the other hand, if Dobbins isn’t great or is in too much of a timeshare with Edwards, then his later-round cost won’t sink your fantasy roster. Overall, Dobbins’ upside outweighs the risk of having him on teams this season.
RB – Jaylen Wright (MIA)
Andy: RB71 | Jason: RB61 | Mike: RB69
ADP: 14.06 | RB46
The potential of being involved in one of the best backfields for fantasy has Mike looking towards Dolphins rookie RB Jaylen Wright as a potential sleeper. This preseason, Wright has shown the explosive play-making ability that made Mike McDaniel want to move up to grab him in the fourth round of this year’s draft. McDaniel has even commented that he doesn’t want to restrict the Dolphins to using just two RBs, so there could be more room for Wright to work his way into the backfield rotation.
Fantasy managers know that investing in good offenses like the Dolphins works! Miami’s backfield was the best one to have a piece of in 2023, finishing as the top team in fantasy points scored from the RB position. Obviously Miami has the dynamic duo of Raheem Mostert and De’Von Achane, but both players have a history of injury problems that could present an opportunity for Wright if they were to miss time again this year. Wright is more like a double insurance policy to potentially cash in if either Mostert or Achane miss time with a high ceiling!
