Unfortunately, Florida goaltender Sergei Bobrovsky was the best overall player on the ice. Regardless, Edmonton outshot Florida 14-4 in the first period alone, and Florida’s 2 goals came in just 5 shots. In other words, Oilers goaltender Stuart Skinner was just not up to the caliber of Bobrovsky. Admittedly, he likely won’t be throughout the Stanley Cup Final, but we also aren’t anticipating such a gap between the 2 goalies. Per Moneypuck’s advanced metrics and expected analytics, Edmonton wins Game 1 nearly 9 times out of 10, so we have every reason to believe that they’ll bounce back before the series heads up north.

After having just mentioned expected outcomes from Moneypuck, it’s the perfect transition into expected goals. Not only was Edmonton the expected victor, but it wasn’t even close. The expected goals from Game 1 were just under 6 for Edmonton and less than 2 for Florida. While we already didn’t expect the Oilers to get shut out yet again, that only further supports a high-scoring game. 

Oddsmakers are still providing us with a 5.5 total rather than 6, which only benefits things from our perspective. Furthermore, when these teams played in the regular season, both games went over the total. If Hyman is to find the back of the net, it will almost certainly be assisted by McDavid. With 26 assists this postseason, he is just 5 away from tying Wayne Gretzky’s record of 31, and that was after his team was shut out in Game 1. That also has McDavid with 31 total points this postseason, which is still the most of any skater. Along with the expected regression from Bobrovsky, expect multiple points from Connor McDavid tonight.
