Netherlands vs England predictions
The Netherlands and England are one win away from the final of Euro 2024. But one of these teams will suffer semi-final heartbreak on Wednesday night.
The Netherlands advanced to the last four courtesy of a 2-1 victory over Turkey. They fell behind in that match when Samet Akaydin nodded home in the 35th minute.
But Ronald Koeman’s men did not panic. The Dutch kept plugging away and they were rewarded when Stefan de Vrij notched a headed equaliser with 70 minutes on the clock.
Soon after, the Netherlands took the lead when Mert Muldur inadvertently turned the ball into his own net. Turkey had chances to level the score, but the Netherlands managed to hold out.
This is quite the turnaround. Koeman’s team only finished third in their group after losing 3-2 to Austria on matchday three.
Yet that defeat may have been a blessing in disguise. It landed the Dutch in the kinder half of the bracket. A 3-0 victory over Romania followed in the round of 16, before the comeback triumph over Turkey at the weekend.
England owe their place in the semis to a penalty shoot-out defeat of Switzerland last time out. The two teams drew 1-1 after 120 minutes, after which five perfect spot-kicks sent Gareth Southgate’s side through.
Remarkably, England have won just one game within 90 minutes at this tournament – and that was their opener against Serbia. In terms of performances, Southgate’s team have been hugely disappointing.
Yet results trump everything when it comes to knockout football and England are now just 90 minutes away from a second consecutive European Championship final.
As for the Netherlands, they have not reached the showpiece event at this continental competition since 1988, when they went on to lift the trophy.
The hosts that year? West Germany. The Dutch are seeking to replicate that achievement, but England stand in their way on Wednesday.
Netherlands vs England betting tips
The Netherlands and England will do battle in Dortmund in the second semi-final of Euro 2024.
Draw – 21/10 (Betfred)
The Netherlands have grown into this tournament. Despite a tally of four points, they were largely unconvincing in the group stage.
But the Dutch hit their stride in the last 16, breezing to a 3-0 victory over Romania. The Turkey game was pretty even, but Koeman’s side did enough to get over the line. The manager, crucially, looks to have settled on a favoured starting XI.
England, for their part, will draw confidence from the fact they continue to find a way to win, even if it is not pretty. Meanwhile Southgate will take heart from the fact his team looked more balanced in their new 3-4-2-1 shape.

The Netherlands have performed better than England up to now, but the latter have more established match-winners capable of turning a game in an instant.
It will be interesting to see which of those factors wins out – but it might take extra time or penalties to find a winner.
It is hard to imagine either team winning this semi-final comfortably. The score may well be level once 90 minutes up.
Go for a draw at 21/10 with Betfred
England to qualify – 4/5 (bet365)
If this match does go to extra time, England would have the edge. First, they have numerous quality options to bring off the bench.
Cole Palmer, Ebere Eze and Ivan Toney appeared as substitutes to good effect against Switzerland. Other options include Ollie Watkins, Jarrod Bowen and Anthony Gordon. There is no shortage of attacking options outside the starting XI.
Secondly, they will not be fazed by the prospect of a penalty shoot-out following their triumph over Switzerland.
That is not to say the Netherlands will be, but this is a nation which has not won a shoot-out at a major competition since 2014. In their last penalty contest, they were beaten by Argentina at the 2022 World Cup.
Southgate’s in-game management is still cause for concern. The England boss often leaves it too late to make changes, reluctant to deviate from the initial plan. But we reckon his side will scrape through once again.
Tip England to qualify at 4/5 with bet365
Bukayo Saka to score or assist – 2/1 (Sky Bet)
England’s switch to a 3-4-2-1 formation had been mooted ahead of the Switzerland game, but it was a surprise to see Saka start at right wing-back rather than on the left.
Southgate’s decision paid off, though. Saka looked dangerous throughout and it was his fine goal that levelled things up late on.
The Arsenal man also scored his penalty in the shoot-out, banishing the demons from his miss in the Euro 2020 final.
Saka has been one of England’s top performers in an underwhelming series of performances to date.
Nathan Ake will be a tough direct opponent, but Saka can still have an impact on Wednesday’s semi-final.
Choose a goal or assist for Bukayo Saka at 2/1 with Sky Bet
