MLB Picks August 12: Brewers host Dodgers in headlined matchup

With less than a third of the MLB regular season yet to be played, teams need to kick it into gear heading for a playoff run. There are 11 games scheduled for August 12. We will examine four of the best matchups for the day with the Brewers at home against the Dodgers in the featured game.

Los Angeles Dodgers versus Milwaukee Brewers

Both teams come into play 1st in their respective divisions. The Dodgers are “average down” on the Team Strength Oscillator after losing the last two while the Brewers are “burning hot” after winning the last three. The teams are trending in games “over” the line, but the score prediction would place the game “under” the line. Milwaukee is +20 to +13 on the Power Ranks Indicator and +101 to +89 in the scoring differential. The Dodgers won two of three at home against the Brewers in the beginning of July.  The Brewers are ten games over .500 at home and the Dodgers are a solid four games over .500 on the road. I like Milwaukee to get even with the Dodgers, continuing their hot play in a game “over” the line.

Texas Rangers versus Boston Red Sox

The teams enter heading in opposite directions. Texas is 2-4 over the last six and Boston is 4-2 during the same span. Both teams are 3rd in the respective divisions. Boston is +11 to +4 on the Power Ranks Indicator and +34 to -23 in scoring differential edge. Ten of the last 12 games the teams have played have been “over” the line and the score prediction is 9-2 in favor of Boston with 54 percent confidence. Boston took two of three previous meetings between the teams this season on the road. Boston is a game under .500 at home as is Texas on the road. Both teams are showing stability on the Team Volatility Oscillator. I like Boston to continue their hot play in a game “over” the line.

Houston Astros versus Tampa Bay Rays

Houston enters “burning hot” on the Team Strength Oscillator after winning the last two and sitting 1st in the AL West. Tampa Bay is “average” after a recent 3-3 stretch and 4th in the AL East. The teams are trending in games on opposite sides of the over/under line with a score prediction of 6-3 in favor of Houston with 69 percent confidence. Houston is +27 to +22 on the Power Ranks Indicator and +44 to -45 scoring differential edge. The Rays won two of the first three games between the teams this season. The Astros are two games under .500 on the road and the Rays are a game over .500 at home. I would like the Rays to continue their good play over the Astros, but pass on the over/under bet.

Atlanta Braves versus San Francisco Giants

Atlanta has hit a wall, losing five of the last six and sit 3rd in the NL East. San Franciso is “burning hot” versus “dead” status after going 7-3 over the last ten. The Giants have a +25 to 0 edge on the Power Ranks Indicator. Both teams are trending in games “over” the line with a score prediction of 7-3 in favor of the Giants.  The Braves have the scoring differential edge of +33 to -7 but have lost two of the three games between the teams this season. Both teams are showing moderate stability on the Team Volatility Oscillator. The teams have combined for only 18 runs in the three head-to-head games this season. I like the Giants to continue their hot play and put the Braves further in the hole in the NL East in a game “under” the line.
