Jaime Munguia does what Canelo Alvarez couldn’t and knocks out John Ryder, albeit in bizarre fashion as the referee didn’t even realise

Jaime Munguia stopped John Ryder in a statement victory on Saturday night in Phoenix, Arizona.

The Mexican floored the Brit four times and forced his corner to end the fight in round nine as he moved to 43-0 (34 KOs).

The fight began with a somewhat tentative opening round as neither man overcommitted early on.

However, the action exploded in round two as Munguia floored Ryder with a quick combination to head and body.

The Mexican pursued a finish, but the experienced Brit did well to recover and heard the bell.

Ryder came back firing and had moments of success in the third, which was a positive comeback round for him following the knockdown.

He continued this form in round four, only to throw away the momentum by making a careless mistake which Munguia capitalised on to score a jab knockdown in the final seconds.

At the start of the fifth, Munguia launched a fresh assault but Ryder weathered the storm once again.

He remained competitive as they passed the halfway point and remarkably came back firing with excellent counters in rounds six and seven.

All of this success unravelled in the eighth as Munguia upped the tempo once again and had him hurt.

In a thrilling round though, Ryder nailed the Mexican with a big counter left hook which forced him to hold and back off.

This was all for nothing in the end, because at the start of round nine Munguia nailed Ryder with a huge right hand for a third knockdown.

This was quickly followed by a fourth and then the fight was stopped by the Brit’s corner.

Bizarrely though, referee Wes Melton didn’t realise the fight was being stopped.

Ryder’s team tried to get his attention, and then so did Munguia’s team, but it wasn’t until the officials at ringside decided to ring the bell midway through the round that Melton knew the fight was over.

Munguia reiterated his desire to fight Canelo Alvarez as he said: “It will be a great fight among Mexicans. If Canelo gives us a chance, it would be an honour to be in the same ring as him.”
