David de Gea signs for new club as ex-Manchester United star takes large pay cut to return to football after a year out

He is expected to have taken a significant pay cut to join the Italian club in comparison to what he was on during his long Premier League career.

The 33-year-old was reported to be on £375,000-per-week at Old Trafford.

The long-serving goalie was released from Old Trafford in the summer of 2023 after the expiration of his contract, which coincided with his wedding to Edurne Garcia.

That was after talks between him and Manchester United fell through, bringing an end to his 12 years at the club.

Despite links with a move to Newcastle and Nottingham Forest, De Gea went the whole of the 2023/24 season without a club.

He was initially signed by Man United’s legendary manager Sir Alex Ferguson in 2011 from Atletico Madrid and from there, he was eventually promoted to being the club’s no.1.

De Gea went on to make 545 appearances for Man United, winning the Premier League, the FA Cup and two League Cups during his time there.

Since his departure, Andre Onana – formerly of Inter Milan until his move to Manchester last summer – has taken his place in goal.

A few weeks back, De Gea posted a hourglass emoji on his X account, hinting at a possible return to football on the horizon.

He has dropped plenty of training videos since his time without a club.

De Gea’s last competitive appearance was over 400 days ago in the Red Devils’ defeat to Manchester City in the 2023 FA Cup final.

Fiorentina finished eighth in the Italian top flight last term, as well as finishing as runners up in the Europa Conference League for the second successive year.

They last won a major trophy in 2001, when they beat Parma to the Coppa Italia.
