Bucs Sign Wide Receiver

The Bucs signed wide receiver Cody Thompson on Wednesday evening. Thompson’s agency Equity Sports posted the news of the signing on their social media account.

Thompson has been in the league since 2019 when he signed to the Chiefs’ practice squad as an undrafted free agent. That same year he was also on the practice squad of the Seahawks and Bengals. Thompson returned to the Seahawks and was with that group from 2020 to 2023. While beginning on the practice squad, he’s had sporadic call ups to the active roster playing in 12 career games in a special teams role. He has three career tackles and a fumble recovery.

He played five games for Seattle in 2021 and seven in 2023. Thompson has made one career catch in his career for 10 yards, which occurred in Week 4 of last season. During his time with the Seahawks he did get to work with former Bucs offensive coordinator Dave Canales.

At the collegiate level, Thompson play for Toledo in the MAC. He was a two-time first team All MAC player, earning those accolades in the 2016 and 2018 seasons. His best year was in 2016 when he recorded 64 catches for 1,269 yards and 11 touchdowns. In his whole career, Thompson had 181 receptions, 3,312 receiving yards and 30 touchdowns.

Thompson will compete for one of the last receiver spots for the Bucs and could make it if he holds his own on special teams.

The Bucs have a couple of open roster spots after waiving Deven Thompkins last week. They filled one of those positions with Cody Thompson. With the Mike Evans, Chris Godwin and Jalen McMillan all sure things to make the team and Trey Palmer not far off, there aren’t too many available openings for the remaining players.

Tampa Bay is still high on Rakim Jarrett and there are some returning practice squad players with Cephus Johnson III and Ryan Miller. Other players on the roster include Raleigh Webb and 2024 undrafted free agents Kameron Johnson, Tanner Knue and Lateral Jones. Thompson adds a little bit of experience to the room.

Head coach Todd Bowles seems to be high on this Bucs’ wide receiver room outside of Evans and Godwin.

“We’ve got a lot of competition come training camp,” Bowles said. “We’ve got some guys that [are] going to surprise some people. I’m looking forward to seeing them in pads. We’re excited to see where it goes.”
