BUCS ALL-22 BREAKDOWN: Liam Coen Sets Up A Big Cade Otton TD

Bucs offensive coordinator Liam Coen is maintaining one of the best offenses in the NFL working with non-household names like running back Rachaad White and Bucky Irving and tight end Cade Otton. Despite being without star wide receivers Mike Evans and Chris Godwin, Coen’s makeshift offense has still put up 24 points per game in each of the last two weeks against Atlanta and Kansas City.

Now, having covered this team for several years, I am acutely aware that all three of those players – White, Irving and Otton – are good weapons as a part of an arsenal that would feature some bigger weapons. But no coordinator in his right mind would want those three players to be the headliners of the offense.

Last week in a BUCS ALL-22 BREAKDOWN, I detailed how offensive coordinator Liam Coen turned tight end Cade Otton into a poor man’s version of Chris Godwin on third-and-medium. In doing so he was able to get the Bucs an opportunity for a big explosive shot down the field that almost turned Tampa Bay’s fortunes around against Atlanta in Week 8.

Now that the league had an extended look at how Coen was creating opportunities for Otton it would be important for the young play-caller to find a new way to create opportunities for his starting tight end to thrive.

Coen went back into the lab last week and found a way to once again create yards, and eventually a big-time touchdown. In another BUCS ALL-22 BREAKDOWN on the PewterReportTV YouTube channel I dive into how Coen uses a simple motion flat route concept to get Otton opportunities to get the ball quickly with room to try and create yards after the catch.

Four of Otton’s first five targets came on this motion flat concept. They yielded gains of nine, 11, two, and four yards for an average of 6.0 yards per target. But most importantly it created a tendency.

A tendency Kansas City would try to jump later on in the game.

And that’s when Coen, Otton and the Bucs offense were ready to pounce.

A Cade Otton Touchdown And A 4-Point Lead

With 11:40 left in the third quarter, the Bucs were threatening with a first-and-10 at the Kansas City 11-yard line. From the shotgun, quarterback Baker Mayfield motioned tight end Cade Otton across the formation right to left to create a 3×1 formation to the left. With the motion, Kansas City shifted its defense a two-high shell to single high with both safeties moving in the same direction as Otton with the field-side safety dropping to the line of scrimmage.

Safety Justin Reid tried to quickly drive down on what he thought was the motion flat that Otton was running. But two issues arose that put Reid in an impossible situation. First it was the late motion that caused him to be late to line. Then it was Bucs wide receiver Ryan Miller effectively picking Reid with his route, giving Otton a free release into his route.

On top of that, Otton did not run the same motion flat route that the Bucs had spammed in the first half. After getting clear of Reid due to Miller’s pick, Otton turned upfield into clear space vacated by the field corner sticking on Miller’s in-breaking vertical route. Mayfield then lofted a beautiful ball into Otton’s awaiting hands to give the Bucs a lead.

What Coen was doing early in the season was impressive. He had Tampa Bay as one of the best passing offenses in the league. Over the past month, Coen has figured out the Bucs run game, transforming it into a Top 10 unit.

Now, two games into missing Mike Evans and Chris Godwin, he still has the Bucs averaging 24 points per game with a rag-tag group of receivers and Otton leading the way. Otton would finish the game with a team-high eight catches for 77 yards and a touchdown and pushed his receiving total over the past three games to 25 catches for 258 yards and three touchdowns.

It has truly been impressive to watch.
