4 Reasons To Be Excited for This Sixers Season

The Sixers regular season starts today if you weren’t aware:

To get fans excited for the season the Sixers are holding out Joel Embiid and Paul George. Not exactly exciting the fanbase. If you’re like me getting through the slog of 82 games because all you really care about is the playoffs. Well here are four things that maybe you haven’t thought about that’ll hold you over during the season.

1. Cheap Tix

Right now you can get into the home opener for $29 on TickPick. Tickets haven’t been this cheap for an opener since Isaiah Canaan and JaKarr Sampson were starting:

Who doesn’t like low prices? That’s more beer money at Xfinity Live! for the pregame. You get a chance to watch an All-NBA season out of Tyrese Maxey and the resurgence of Guerschon Yabusele for less than it costs to park during Eagles gamedays. Tickets are going to be LOW this season. So you’ll probably get to see Jared McCain’s development on a Tuesday against the Hornets for the price of the bridge toll. Now will you splurge one night for the 100 level and get the last minute Joel Embiid OUT injury status? Of course you will! It’s already happened before Game 1. If you don’t think the Sixers knew both Embiid and Paul George would be out days ago I have beachfront property in Iowa I’d like to sell you. But that’s the price of being a Sixers fan, dummy! That’s the thrill! You hate it, but in a sick way you kind of love it. When you finally get that Embiid update 15 minutes before the game after sitting on 95 for two hours you get this rush of emotion. Some of it is anger, but some of it is satisfaction that you were right – which outweighs the bad in some sick way. You’re like a child of divorce where the dad is a deadbeat and he forgot to pick you up from your mom’s house again. You knew it was coming, but in the back of your mind there was that voice thinking, “What-if?” as you battled for every inch on the Schuylkill Expressway. In the end you were right because you’re always right.

2. No Tobias Harris

This should honestly be #1. A Tobias Harris free NBA season. No more clanked corner threes, no more dribbling out the shot clock trying to get to the elbow and bricking a jumper, and no more bloated contract that you can’t even move at the deadline. If this season goes down the drain at least it didn’t go down with Tobias Harris scoring zero points in 29 minutes during an elimination game:

3. The Flyers/Sixers Doubleheaders

In the last season with naming rights, the Wells Fargo Center might be a dungeon of losing over this next eight months. The Flyers suck. There’s no other way to put it. They’ve had more lines in their system than the entire lineup at Live Aid:

The Sixers aren’t going to fare much worse. I’ve got the total for Embiid games at home sitting at 22.5 and the total for PG at 27. They could miss almost half of the home slate. Perfect for not breaking the bank on the doubleheader. Pair that with the elusive triple-header with the Phillies (none this year unfortunately) and you might be able to have yourself a day in South Philly.

Here are the doubleheaders this season:

November 2nd: Flyers vs. Bruins, Sixers vs. Grizzlies

February 22nd: Flyers vs. Oilers, Sixers vs. Brooklyn

March 9th: Flyers vs. Devils, Sixers vs. Jazz

March 29th: Flyers vs. Sabres, Sixers vs. Heat

And who doesn’t love a good changeover!

4. People Losing Their Minds Over Embiid Sitting

I truly am looking forward to this. I thought Spike Eskin had the best point I’ve seen so far when Embiid was announced out for Game 1:

Now that the Sixers are already being investigated by the NBA for the plan, which we have no idea about, looks like it might have to be re-tooled. I know the optics look bad that Embiid can’t play the season opener after playing in the Olympics, but I personally don’t care. It’s all about keeping him healthy for the playoffs. There will still be some great takes. Marcus Hayes at the Inky (edit: Hayes has updated the lede) has already started on them:

Kind of an insane way to get your point across, but I didn’t go to Big J school. Personally I wouldn’t invoke Embiid’s dead brother and young son and use that argument as to why he needs to come into the season in better shape and play more, but I don’t have a credential.
