Tour de France Stage 1 Predictions, Odds, and Best Bets
As opposed to last year, there are some changes to the Stage 1 course. There is more total climbing, which compares closer to a mountain stage in 2024. Following a rapid climb, the course features a descent led by a flat sprint finish.
Look for Team UAE to deliver an opening stage blow to Jonas Vingegaard. Last year’s winner is going to race, but his fitness levels are incredibly shaky.
It will likely take Vingegaard two or three stages to get to form. I am not discarding him as much as other bettors, though Stage 1 is shaping up to be a chore. With that in mind, UAE will press Vingegaard and their rivals from the start.
Despite recently winning the Giro d’Italia easily, Tadej Pogacar is one of the healthiest contenders for Stage 1. Many of the other top contenders are dealing with various problems. Pogacar is focused, motivated, and has loads of confidence.
Vingegaard is likely to peak later in the race when fatigue is more of a concern for other riders. Getting out to a comfortable lead will be paramount for UAE.
Last year, Pogacar wasn’t fully healthy entering the Tour de France and still finished third in Stage 1. Adam Yates prevailed ahead of Simon Yates and Pogacar.
A healthy and determined Pogacar will be difficult to beat in the sprint to the finish this year. The Stage 1 Tour de France pick on Pogacar is worth a play at plus odds. UAE pressures and controls the Tour de France from the opening stage!
My Tour de France Stage Betting Strategy
Betting on individual Tour de France stages can be both exciting and profitable. Unlike the outright winner odds, which are usually dominated by one or two favorites (Vingegaard and Pogacar in 2024), the stages are often very competitive.
They provide all contestants with opportunities to write their name in the history books and all bettors with a chance to find some juicy wins! Here’s how I plan to do the latter.
1. Stage Analysis
The first step in my preparation is to analyze the stage. Certain cyclists excel in mountain stages, while others prefer flat terrain. The nature of each stage determines the favorites, so I always explore it.
The official site of Tour de France has an excellent section on the route, so I just go there and check the stage I’m about to target.
2. Evaluating the Bigger Picture
Once I know what to expect from the terrain, it’s time to explore the context. How is the general classification going? Will the leaders see an opportunity to push hard? Did they use lots of energy in previous stages, forcing them to take it easy?
I just try to figure out how each contestant will approach the stage. For example, a cyclist who’s already behind in the general classification will usually look for opportunities to challenge for stage wins in stages that fit his strengths.
There are other factors to consider, like some of the side classifications, team goals, the latest news, and so on. I try to cover everything, so you don’t have to if you don’t have the time!
3. Hunting for the Best Odds
Finally, I start looking at the latest odds. I go through a few top cycling betting sites to make sure I get the highest potential return for my Tour de France stage predictions.
I’ve selected BetUS and Bovada for this post because they offer odds on all stages, including props and specials. I will visit both for each stage to find the best bets possible!
