Watch scary moment fans fall as railing collapses during fighter walkout at UFC 289

Mike Malott was almost taken out by his own fans at UFC 289.

The Canadian got the biggest cheer of the night when he walked to the Octagon for his fight with Adam Fugitt at the Rogers Center in Vancouver on Saturday.

However, as he began his short journey to the cage, a railing collapsed, and a big group of fans, who appeared to be trying to high-five him, fell into his path.

Commentator Jon Anik soon reassured viewers that no one was hurt during the incident but nonetheless, it was still a worrying scene that marred the UFC’s first Canadian event since 2019.

A spokesperson for the arena issued a statement to MMA fighting.

It reads: “The safety of our fans is our number one priority at Rogers Arena.”

“At tonight’s UFC event, as fans leaned over to greet the fighters, a railing fell down. Our arena staff worked quickly to relocate fans in the affected area and no serious injuries were reported.

“Venue security and staff remained on-site throughout the rest of the evening to ensure everyone’s safety.”

Nearly being wiped out during his ring walk didn’t seem to bother Malott at all as he secured a second-round guillotine submission win to improve his MMA record to 10-1-1.

The 31-year-old is currently riding a six-fight win streak and has finished all four of his UFC opponents, including former CM Punk foe Mickey Gall, since signing for Dana White’s company.

Mallott first came to the attention of most MMA fans when he scored another guillotine submission win over Shimon Smotritsky on Contender Series in October 2021.

During his post-fight interview, he was not interested in addressing in the pre-fight incident and instead used his mic time to get his hometown fans hyped up.

“Being able to represent my country on the world stage, at home, that’s been a dream of mine since I was a little kid,” Malott told Daniel Cormier.

“This has been in my mind for 30 years! I can’t believe I finally got to do this, but there was no damn way I wasn’t holding down the fort tonight.

“I was the last Canadian. I’ve got to protect the house! We can run with anyone in the world. We are the best country in the world, nobody is slowing down ‘The Maple Leaf Militia!’”
